I just received a Kindle as a gift and am learning how to download books and find my way around using it. Does anyone else use one and can you give some pointers. Is there other places to get books other than amazon? I haven't decided yet if I like it or not, I think I'll miss having that book in my hand and turning pages.

I just got a Nook a few weeks ago and I love it. Before I bought it, I was using (and still do use) the free Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPhone to read Kindle books. I just found a method that's supposed to work for converting Kindle books to a format I can read on my Nook.

Here is a source for free ebooks for the Kindle, Nook, and other readers. These are public domain books, mostly classics, and come in a variety of formats. You choose the format that your reader will use. If you need a conversion tool, just scroll down the page.

http://manybooks.net/about/

Amazon offers free ebooks for the Kindle as well. Some are older classics in public domain, but there are also newer books that are free for a limited time. You can do a search on Amazon for "free kindle books". Or look on the Amazon Kindle store for the best sellers, because many of them will be the current free ebooks.

Barnes and Noble also offers a free ereader for your desktop and for your iPhone/iPod Touch. I actually like B&N ereader for the iPod Touch better than the free Kindle reader as the B&N version has auto scrolling. B&N also has a hugh selection of free ebooks, mainly ones in the public domain, but also some newer books.

One of the reasons that I got the Nook was that the Nook takes more formats than the Kindle. Like epub, for example, which is used by a lot of libraries that lend ebooks. So I'm not locked into buying from just one store. The Kindle won't read the Nook's main format and the Nook won't read the Kindle's, but there are conversion tools available.

I'm studying for an MS in Information Studies and Library Science and I collect books, so I don't think the Nook will keep me from buying real books. I'm just going to be choosier about what I buy in hard/paper book format, probably mainly craft books and such. I'll probably buy novels, bios, and such mainly in ebook form. I was running out of book shelf space at home anyway.

Probably the best thing about having an e-reader, even if only the free e-reader software for your computer or iPod, is the ability to get the old classics for free, even ones that aren't in print anymore.

For those of you who want to read free ebooks, but don't want to invest in an e-reader, here are the links for the free software.

The free Kindle e-readers for PC, iPhone/iPod Touch, etc. are at this link:

I too am an avid reader and my library here at home in my small house is full. I just got the nook from Barnes and NOble for an early Mother's Day present. I love it. It has many more perks than Kindle and I find it easy to use. Today was free ebook Friday. I could download the free book they offered and I did becasue it was Debbie Macomber.

My husband and I specifically designed our house so that we would have a whole library to fill with books. But even so, I am a Kindle owner and I use it very frequently. It's not the same as having a book in your hand, but it definitely has some perks. I can usually find books on Amazon that I'm not able to find in any local bookstore, and it's extremely convenient to take on trips if you usually lug around multiple books (like I do). I really like my Kindle, but I could never see giving up my "real" books for it. There's just a feeling I get from holding an actual book that can't be replicated by plastic.

Hi Karen, a Kindle is an electronic book from Amazon. It allows you to either buy books from them and download via satellite or download free books they have on there web site. It is quite thin and about the size of a regular book. You have to push a button to get a page to turn and it can hold alot of books and audio books. I love reading when I take a bath so it is not very practical for that, one more reason to have another book going :). Did you get the package I sent you last week? Congrats on the new home too!!!

My DH has the Nook from Barnes and Noble. Apparently he did some research and thought it was better than the Kindle because you can replace the batteries and download books from lots of places and also MP3s. I am electronically challenged so I don't use it, but he loves it and is downloading lots of self-sufficient stuff. We have so many books, but they are hard to take with you. This is small and makes it easy to have a portable library.

I have been wanting a nook from Barnes and Noble which is just like a Kindle...saving for it...I too love the feel of real books but think this is nice for trips, watching sports etc.. The Nook allows you to elend your books to others...in case you were wondering. That is why I like it better than the Kindle

I don't own a Kindle but I have some friends (avid readers) who do and they love it. I collect books (mostly non-fiction and reference such as sewing, cooking, gardening, knitting, beekeeping) so I'm not sure a Kindle is for me. I don't read a lot of modern fiction (I don't want to read about dysfunctional families) so that's another reason I haven't gotten one. I listen to audio books in the car, and I didn't know about the audio feature on the Kindle, so maybe I'd like that. It's a new technology and not perfected--another negative. Plus, I don't like that for $10 each, you can't share your books! Any Kindle lovers out there? Dianne

I have had one for about a year now. I don't think it's a substitute for books but it sure is nice when going somewhere to just slip it in my purse. I like buying books that have the voice to text option so I can listen as I work. I have also put audio books from download on it. I like that I can get books instantly when I want them and I don't have to store them. My partner has one too and both are registered to me so we can share books. I especially like it when I am reading a really long book as big books in hardback can get heavy after awhile. It does take some getting used to at first but it does grow on you, believe me.

Blessings, Sheri
