I am very very interested in compiling a list of books for a home library. I would like to compose a list of really truly helpful, functional books for homemaking/housekeeping.
Things I would look for are really good FarmGirl books, teaching cookbooks, books on how to live on a budget, books about child rearing, books about house cleaning and maybe a few titles on other areas (i.e. medical, nutrition, health, etc.).
My suggestion for one book would be Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson, it's an
excellent resource guide (she now has one on Laundry, also very good).

I am interested in what everyone uses. If you know of a list already, by all means I would be interested (no sense in reinventing the wheel).

Books, books, books, how I love em. A good reference health book is 'Prescription for Nutritional Healing'. And reading any Scott and/or Helen Nearing book puts life in perspective again.

Reader's Digest has a number of good books about gardening, needlework, homesteading, and so on. They are excellent summaries of the topics involved and actually have enough information to get you started. You may want more detail later, but I highly recommend them for topic surveys.

I rely on the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving, the Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual, and Auto Repair for Dummies.

I second the Country Wisdom and Know-How book, Tina. I love it. I have stocked up on several different books, from herbs, crafts, Essential oils, homemade beauty, and the list goes on, as I have time to look through them, I will post if any of them are really good. Oh, one that I enjoy is Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair.

I just purchased the "Country Wisdom and Know How" gracious is it a good book. Lots of info on everything from raising chickens to butchering rabits, to making your own candles, caning a chair, growing herbs and so much more..even how to make dog food for your pets!

Hey farmgirls, Kate here...since we are planning a move to the country, I wanted to get more info from you gals on good books to have.
I would like a good home library that covers alot of different subjects on self-sufficient, natural living:
Home care/repair
Canning
Sewing
Gardening, organic of course
Herbal health care
Animal care
Foraging/wild harvest
Hunting/preserving meats
Solar energy/water saving etc.
Soap making

Post your favorites, let's make an awesome list

Here's my two cents
Living the Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing
The Fanny Farmer Cookbook

Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living is a must have...so are the Tightwad Gazette books..there are three. I have a book called Superwoman that I love too...very practical.
Gosh...I have a zillion books..I will for sure be adding more when I think a little while.

For general house and car repair, I really like the "Dare to Repair" books - they are a bit girly in the titles, but the information in the books has never let me down!

XOXO, Libbie
