Vicky,
I did see the movie last fall. I was sssoooo disappointed in it. They left so much out. The book was absolutely amazing though! I don't think people are as strong nowadays (sp) as they were back then. I know that author has more books out that are based on true stories from back in the day. When I have a chance to read something again, I think I'll pick one his!

Take care, Melissa.

Oops, got off of the subject. As to western books, I use to read alot of Roseanne Bittner books. She wrote alot of western-native american stories. I'm pretty sure they weren't very naughty.

I read that also Melissa, wasn't that an amazing book? I can't imagine a person going through all that in these modern times.
She was one determined woman. Did you happen to see the movie - I
was very disappointed in that.

Channah,
I wouldn't consider this a true western, but it does have indians and settlers. It's called "Follow the River" by James Alexander Thom. It is based on a true story that happened back in 1755. I have read it several times and absolutely love it. It amazes the the stuff she went through to get home to her family.
Louis L'Amour as mentioned above is also a great author. I read one of his books once, I think the title was "Ride the River". The main character in it was a girl your age maybe a little older Echo Sackett was her name. It was also a very good book.
Have fun choosing your next book!

Take care, Melissa.

Maggie--when I was fourteen, I read "True Grit" and loved it. It's a lot different than the movie--better, I believe. Another good book about a family living in Wyoming in the early 1900's was "Little Britches".Can't remember the author, but it's a true story.

Have you read any of Jeanette Oke? She's a good writer and most of her books are set either in the midwest or Canada. I read them years ago, and loved them, so did my girls.
