Oh my goodness, two treats in one!! I love the Mitford series and have just started over with book 1. My dear sweet husband went to Blockbusters and came home with a Mitford cookbook for me. I love cookbooks! He said "I saw you were reading these books and this book was on sale, from $24.99 down to $3. What a savings, and I did not even know there was a cookbook. So now I reading the cookbook that has not only all the recipes from the books, but Jan Karon has new stories to go along with each recipe. I am just so excited, and to think my husband did this on his own. Wow, what a treat!! LOL

I LOVE the Mitford Series and was thrilled when I found my cookbook :) I was able to purchase mine at a killer price too, $5.00 on Amamzon for 'used' but you would never know it.
I can't wait to try Louella's biscuits!

I love the Mitford cookbook! My sister and I have birthdays close together and always celebrate with a themed party. A couple of years ago we did Mitford. We made all our dishes from that cookbook. We especially loved Cynthia's Green Beans and Ray's cole slaw. And Louella's biscuits are the bomb! Happy Cookin'

Dianne - I am the same way with authors I like, I have to read everything they have ever written. I do love the Mitford series.

The Mitford Books are one of my favorite series...I LOVE the characters...all quirky. And the town and homes are so cozy, for the most part. I have the cookbook and have only made a few things from it, but when I love an author or series, I just need to read it all. If you want a different take on Mitford, listen to the books on CD or tape. They are so enjoyable! Dianne

Wow, I guess I didn't realize that people all over the world and USA read the "Midford" series. I read them all because Jan is a local writer. She lives here in the NC mountains.
I love the books also. I didn't know that there was a cookbook. I'll check it out.

Isn't that a great book! I also love the Mitford series and I grabbed that book. I agree it read like a novel too, along with the recipes you got a great story book too!

Oh that is too funny. I agree with you, too. I read that recipe and thought to myself "now exactly WHEN would I have the time to do all those steps??" so if I ever come across an Orange Marmalade cake at a church bazaar or something, I'm just going to buy it instead of bake it...

I bought my mother that cookbook and told her I'd make the Orange Marmalade cake that shows up in every book. My parents had recently located to a different home so I wasn't familiar with the kitchen, I'd never made the cake before...and let's just say I'm no kitchen whiz to begin with...and the cake had a gazillion steps and ingredients. I think it took me something like 3 hours to make that thing. It was super moist and tasted good (even though it slightly resembled the Leaning Tower of Pisa)but I told my mother she'd better enjoy it because it was the first and last time I was ever making it. I found the Mitford books way more relaxing to read than to cook with! |

I am a big fan of Jan Karon and have most of the Mitford books and the Cookbook and Kitchen Reader. The last one I bought was called The Mitford Bedside Companion. The only ones I don't have are the ones I don't know about, I guess!
I also like to read the Harmony books by Philip Gulley. What a great writer he is; has a real knack for taking one down memory lane, for sure.
I am (in the past few years) a huge fan of all the books by Eleanor Roosevelt. She was quite a gal, regardless of your political persuasion. She had GUTS before most of us women knew what guts were.
I like to read quirky stuff sometimes, like 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited -- that kinda stuff. Seems to be almost surreal that some of it is actually coming to pass.
One book that I laughed my way through from beginning to end was The Bible According to Mark Twain. Now THERE was a real character -- no wonder he was a writer.
I also like to read Zane Gray (there is confusion about how to spell his last name) and he was reportedly a very distant relative of the paternal side of my family. I also like Louis L'Amour.
To sum it up, I guess about the only thing I'm NOT interested in is Sci-Fi. Nope, nope, nope -- not for me. I'd rather read a cookbook any day of the week.

I have all the Mitford books too, and the cookbook. That was a really thoughtful thing for your Hubby to do! That is such a nice series to read.

Hi Lori!! I just found your email in my SPAM box, you are the furthest from spam to me. I've moved your note over to my mail box and will get a note to you in the AM. 2 more days and I will have my house back to myself during the days again. So glad hubby is back to work on Wednesday. I love him dearly but I need my spaaaaace. LOL This is the most fun cookbook I've read in awhile. I'm even taking it to bed to read at night!! LOL
