i 'thunk' up a good idea! i am so very much enjoying MaryJane's Farm magazines (i ordered all the back issues) .. that i thought it would be fun if those of us who have them .. did a little 'reading club' thingie. AND .. those of you that don't have them .. go to the website and treat yourself to them! If you love her book .. you will also adore the magazines! AND .. you will wish you had all of the issues at some point .. so .. go get 'em before they are out of print (like the FIRST issue) .. HA! anyone have an extra one of those that you would like to SWAP .. or SELL to me???

I picked the issue with the twig branch and bird nests and iris for our first 'reading club' issue. Go through it .. and pull out quotes and stories that you really enjoyed .. that .. of course .. would be ALL of them .. but let's share and discuss them!

I really enjoyed the story by Kim Redeker about the SWEET GRANADA chocolate shop located in Kansas. It reminded me a lot of that fun film: CHOCOLAT with Johnny Depp .. IF you haven't seen that movie yet .. run out and rent it ... a sweet story! Even has a little girl in it that the photo of the owner's daughter pictured reminds me of!

The 'chocolate quotes' were great: CHOCOLATE IS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY, AND YOU NEVER NEED AN APPOINTMENT .. the photos are superb (as always) ... and there is a great little 'history' of chocolate!

AND .. being a diabetic .. i have to pick and choose wisely .. and some chocolates (i am told) are low on the glycemic scale ...

i am going to call Sweet Granada today and order some of their made for farm-girls-only SUNFLOWER chocolates. (Sunflowers .. ARE .. my most favorite flower .. so i know i'll love the chocolates!

Makes me want to be whipped up in a tornado and carried off to Kansas!

o.k. .. get your 'wild iris' issue out and tell me of some of your favorite articles!

Allison, that's EXCELLENT. Way to go on taking the initiative.

Well, I just got back from the store. The 'buyer's' were already gone for the weekend BUT I did talk to one of the managers that I know there and was telling her all about MJ's Farm. She got on the website and kept saying 'wow, WOW!'. (We all know how that is)
Anyway, she was excited about it and was impressed with how much product there was etc.
I told her about the book and the magazines and a little about what was in them. How MJ grows her own organic products, came up with a jello that had no animal products in it, created her own combination of ingredients and worked on them until she was satisfied. Had her own mill. Ok, it was a lot of information in a very short period of time.
To make a long story short, she's instructing the buyer's to call me and she's going to check out the website.
She said that MJ sounded a lot like a friend of her's that camps out in tents in the Alaska in the summer cooking for the fisherman.(I had mentioned the forest ranger bio etc).
Anyway, good feeling about this so far but we'll see.

I would love to read the magazine, but none of the bookstores around here seem to carry it. Someday...the money I nominally get in my paycheck will actually spend a few days in my possession (it seems to all be spoken for before it even arrives!), and when that day comes I'll place an order with MaryJane's. I just can't see sending away through the mail for one issue, so I'm saving up for the inclusion with order deal.

I'm not kidding. It's officially on my list (you should see this wish list, it gets longer every year).

OOHH! I just called and was so happy to hear I can also sell the magazine. Sometimes you have to get magazines through a distributor and I wouldn't be able to make a minimum order, so now I know I can share the "reading room"'s topic-o'-the-day - the Kitchen Issue of the MJFarm magazine. How exciting is that?

Dar - sounds like you could be a great regional rep for MJ's foods! Love the little packet you made up to share the goodness. Great idea.

As I read your post, I realized that it would be REALLY great if I could carry some of the foods in my little dharma gift shop. Some of the same things are being sold in bulk at the food co-op around the corner (like the black bean flakes and such, but the budget mix and chillover packets and such are not available locally, as far as I can tell.

I will have to get on the phone today and see if I can place a small wholesale order (hubby's out of work and we're fronting the retail shop) so we can at least start with a sampling for local folks to try. I'm glad your post made me think of that. Imagine the new magazine right next to some homemade samples and the mixes right there. I wonder if I can do that - well, off to the bat-phone!

I'm in the process of getting my local HF store to carry MJ's products so I can just walk over anytime I want and pick up whatever I'm in the mood for.
So, I grabbed a couple of the magazines that I recently received and the book and one of the packages of food that I still had and put them in a nice little fabric sack. I took them to the woman who does the ordering and told her a little bit about the farm. She was very interested. Unfortunately, she was also leaving the area BUT she promised to give the contact information to the next person that will be doing the ordering and have them look into it. She said she was very impressed with what little she had a chance to see in my little package.
I'm going to stop back in the store tonight and see what I can find out.

oh allison .. i so agree .. i check the front porch three times a day to see if the UPS man has arrived! will probably skip the sticky buns cuz' i'd surely gobble them all down at one sitting and go into a diabetic coma! i love that there are so many options in maryjane's magazine .. isn't this just a fabulous 'cook book' magazine issue! xo

Has anyone tried the sticky buns recipe in the magazine? My husband loves sugary pastires in the morning, and I wondered how they had turned out.

Gosh darned time! I have to wait for my budget mix to come. Whatever happened to instant gratification!

Does anyone else own a baby book that's basically empty? The picture on page 164 reminded me of the day I discovered my baby book - well, three of them - only to find my brother and sisters were all filled and all of mine ended after page 3. Oh, well, being the last child meant my mother was terribly busy. Still, I like to have been able to see those things in print. I don't think my mother remembers all that stuff like she used to.

Those adorable sneakers and striped socks made me giggle. My daughter and I both wear Converse high tops and we love to pair them with fun socks, especially polka dots and not only that but unmatching! In my universe that's angel uniform stuff!

On the inside of the back cover, there's a photo of a white rack with vintage linens hanging from it. I just saw a cd rack similar to that at a yard sale. I have to go back and pay them for a lamp I bought. (I bought a bunch of stuff and they're letting me come back.) If they still have it, I'll bet it would look nice with some teatowels and dresser scarves on its rungs. Nice to have these ideas floating around.

And, too late, those blue-green glass candlesticks were already sold when I got to the thrift store. They were there forever, but now that I was going to buy them: voila! gone!

The first magazine I've seen is the current baking issue. I had it for about a day when my neighbor borrowed it. I'm currently in withdrawal from the magazine! LOL I think I will be getting visitation rights to it any day now. She and I both love the magazine....NO adds, heavyduty paper, Love the photos....but of course we read the articles....*g*

Eileen .. i sure wish i could find a local source for MaryJane's products! The closest i've found so far is some of her foods at REI sporting good store in Nashville .. mostly food for back-packers .. and that is a 2.5 hour ride from me! Is it a small store that sells here goods .. i don't think the big 'chain' ones do. If i had a store, i sure would carry them! I do have a neighbor that grows organic and i buy summer produce from her .. and since i use no pesticides whatsoever .. i guess what i grow is somewhat organic too! xo

Well Frannie,
What a fun idea. I have and love every issue of the magalog as well as her book. I will be ordering her little book of wisdom as soon as I get paid. I am lucky enough to live in a town not too far away from a food co-op that carries her merchandise. That is where i found my first issue of the magalog and the very next time I went shopping there I bought a sampling of everything they carried from her inventory. It is all soo good. I shop for most of my supply of instant food for traveling and fast meals when I am there. This way I feel I am encouraging my local store to keep a good supply.
I just love all the recipies in the latest issue, don't you?

Hi all
Well because of the latest issue I have ordered a lot of MJ'S products and loved them all.I love the feel of the magazine, as in the kind of paper used. The pictures all through the magazine are so well done, the sunflower on page 115 jumps right off the page!I love the little bare feet with flour on pages 52 and 53, reminds me of my granddaughters. And can't forget one of my favorite things,APRONS, lots of those showed up in this issue.

MaryJane's magazines and the kitchen Aide mixer have just moved up on my want list. They have both been on the list for sometime, they just seemed to keep getting pushed back for something that seems a little more important. Right now the only thing ahead of them is a new rototiller, so I can quit farming out all the tilling work. I know that her magazines would be read over and over and over. Especially if her magazines are anything like her book. I have had it for 3 months now, read it from cover to cover, and it still hasn't migrated into the bookshelf. It sits on the coffee table, on my desk, or in the car. I have even started using post-it notes to mark on the pages I want to read again, for the millionth time. I think we need a MaryJane's Ideabook Club!!!

loved reading about the farmgirl chapters on pages 48 and 49. do any of your gurlz belong to a farmgirl chapter?

we had a wonderfully fun gathering of farmgirls from several states a few weeks back .. we spent a couple nights and few days together.

i do plan on another gathering .. will probably be a 'one-day' one this time though .. have some fun plans for the day .. sooooo .. be thinkin' of travelling this way (central Kentucky) .. sometime during the month of JULY .. will let everyone know the date soon's i know of it! we will probably hang out here at cabin creek farm and do some creating and baking and cookin' over the firepit .. and walkin' in the woods .. and lots of idea exchanges and stories and giggles! e-mail me if you think you even MIGHT be able to attend. i hope to get some of the local girls to come to this one too!

IF you need to spend the night .. we have sweeeeet cabins down by the river right in the town of GREENSBURG .. they are only $45. per night and sleeps about 4 people per cabin .. which is pretty reasonable split 4 ways! but let me know as soon as you hear of the DATE cuz' it is summertime .. there is canoeing down on the river and they may book early (only 4 cabins down there!) xo, frannie

p.s. i'll put this in it's own thread too!

oh i just HAD to have that beautiful Kitchen Aid mixer .. i think i've used it once or twice .. but it's nice to know it's there when i want it! Don't have one of those toaster/broiler thingies .. did years ago .. but i was usually jus' settin' that sucker on fire! I don't do the electric can opener either. I mean .. HOW EASY is it just cranking that hand-held thingie .. HA! can probably say the same thing about a lot of other electric doo-dahs that i have!

Oh chile .. i HIGHLY recommend a Bernina .. i don't even take as good care of mine as i should (like OILING it! but it never fails me!) Kinda' expensive .. but you can get a reconditioned one if you prefer .. actually, mine does about a ka-billion things that i don't need it to do .. just back and forth .. an occasional zig-zag .. but MOSTLY .. no TENSION bunching! xo

Frannie,

I do grind my coffee beans every morning. Used to have a hand grinder, but someone gave me a little electric one and I do like it! As far as electric appliances, I have the kitchenaid mixer on the counter too. Love it and use it often. Cuisanart is in the closet - use it once a week. Gave my toaster to our daughter. If we have toast, I just do it in the broiler. Have a blender that I use mostly in the summer. No electric can opener. Bread machine also in garage. Used it at first, but I like kneading my bread and the whole process of doing it by hand. I think I'll have a yard sale. Boss gave me a set it and forget it - and I forgot it!! Takes up too much room. Why couldn't he give me money!! I'll sell that too.

I'm gonna check out Bernina sewing machines if you are happy with yours. I have a Singer zig zag from 1978 that still works great, but the zipper foot broke off the shank & I cannot find a replacement. Bought one online that I thought would work and it doesn't fit. I'll keep looking, as I hate to trash something that still works, but will check out Bernina's too.

Allison - I'm gonna try some of the make-do pincushions too! Love them.

oh chile' .. i admire anyone who can get good results with an olde treadle sewing machine .. i am addicted to my BERNINA .. i think the reason i stopped sewing was because of TENSION hang-ups .. usta' drive me nutz! i've NEVER had a tension problem with my bernina .. love that machine!

and ... i so admire your use of SOAP!!!
