30 some years ago I bought this book of Carla Emery's back when she first wrote it. I lost it somewwhere, I think I loaned it out but I now have the updated 9th edition. If you have not read it or added it to your library I recommend it. Its an old fashioned recipe book contains everything a farmgirl might need to know or interested in hearing.

Thank you again, it is an honor. We'll see what comes of "the birds and the bees...and goats"! I'm off to explore the garden today between rain showers...or as we say in the Pacific Northwest...during "sun breaks". Have a good one!

First of all congratulations on your books being published! As for a title for the book on bees, chickens, and goats (and you'll have to forgive me because I've been running all day and I'm tired!) How about "Buzzes, Bawks, and Bleats, the Joys of Raising Bees, Chickens, and Goats"

I'd welcome one on chickens and goats. In fact I wish it were available - I"d get it for my dd for Christmas - she just got chickens. That really sounds like an awesome honor for an author. Congrats.

dear friends, thank you for your kind words. Perhaps you are the crowd to pose this question to. We're considering a 3rd title in the series on backyard bees, chickens and goats...any thoughts?

Lorene - I look forward to seeing your guides. The Encyclopedia is just that - a great volume on knowlege. To have the info broken down into smaller guides will be quite useful to so many people. Good luck with your book!

I too, like Jenny, had some personal contact with Carla. I met her at the Renewable Energy Fair in John Day OR where she was selling her books with her second husband Don and was also the Keynote speaker at the Fair that year She called me a few times after our meeting - we were trying to arrange for a class either in Washington or Montana, but her schedule changed and she was unable to be there at the same time I was. She was VERY nice and down to earth. Cheryl I envy you your original copy of the book. The first time I met Carla was when she was traveling around to fairs selling it by the chapter - she had some of her kids with her at the fair - and she came to our town. I was really interested in it - and took all of her handouts, but we were too broke at the time to commit to purchasing it. Oh, how I wish I would have been able to find the money!! Anyway, I have the early green covered bound edition - and I love it - love the personal stories of her life and struggles. At the Re-fair, I purchased the latest copy which Carla signed for me, but I really prefer the earlier edition. In the latest edition, there is more information, but it is WAY less personal - most of her personal anecdotal stories are missing. I'm sure that was the idea of the publisher. I too miss her - and I would travel a great distance to hear her speak again were that possible.

Hello friends, it warms my (freelance writers) heart to get in on your discussion of Carla Emery. Please allow me a story... As a newly full-time writer, last spring I pushed myself outside my comfort zone and contacted a local publisher I had worked with before to pitch an idea for a book.

My editor showed up at our meeting with a huge phonebook-like volume under his arm. Hmmmm...I don't think he was going to be hearing my idea - but hey, a project is a project no? The volumne was Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living and the project was to write a single subject book on canning and preserving pulling from her original material. One book turned into two and I began with a book on gardening "Growing your own vegetables, an Encyclopedia Country Living Guide" is due out in bookstores in early April 09. "Canning and Preserving your Harvest" will follow later in the summer of 09.

In the five months since this project so fortuitously landed in my lap I have had the wonder and the privelege to wade through the 900+ pages of Carlas work. The 10th edition was published in July - that's the one out in bookstores right now. It's funny how time wrinkles in on itself. Nearly 30 years ago in a fit of city-style independence I purchased Carla's book. Her work is "evergreen", it's as pertinent today as it was then, perhaps even more so! And my favorite part is it all goes back to our grandparents and great-grandparents and those values and life skills they relied on.

If you'd like to read about my adventures writing these books here are a couple of links to my blog where I recorded some thoughts. http://plantedathome.com/blog/2008/08/07/book-projects-1-2/ and http://plantedathome.com/blog/2008/09/02/just-a-quickie/

Jenny! That is too cool that she came to your house! We actually just got the new book from amazon. I'm reading all about peak oil and global warming and we are trying to get our little suburban lot as self sustaining as we can! We are reading-Gardening when it counts,Just in case, and Depletion and Abundance!!!! Too cool that all of you knew her before! Hugs!

I have 3 different versions. And I did get to meet her! It was so fun. She stayed at our house two different times when she came here to our town to speak a few years ago and I hosted her. the second time she stayed 3 days since she didn't have another speaking engagement for a few days. It was so nice. She pulled weeds with me in my garden and we visited for hours. She was just a sweet, down to earth, humble gal and I miss her. You know that she died about 2 years ago, right? She sure left a legacy!! I would have been lost without her book many times.

Yes I do wish I had met her.. I had one of her original ones bound with wire. Really plastic coated wire holding together like a three ring binder. The first time I saw her was when she was promoting her book on Good Morning America. She talks about that in her book. I love the way she incorporated her child rearing day to day life in the cook book.

I purchased this book at Costco recently and have really enjoyed it so far. Don't you wish you could have met her? Well, I guess reading her book is about as close as we'll get.

Amen to Cheryl!
I have the orginal one that she sent out in chapters that Carla copied as she had them done. It's in a 4" binder with homemade dividers that I made.
One day I'll get the updated copy.

This book is not only a work of inspiration, it is so helpful. We couldn't have learned how the butcher without it.
