Anyone read this book yet? I just got it yesterday. I ordered it from my book club a week or two ago. It's a cute book. I was just wondering what you all thought about it and if anybody has made any of the patterns out of it. ~~~ Tracy

Oh how well I know the FRUSTRATION of an UNcooperative machine Kristin!!! My sewing maching is a Singer Schooling machine. It will sew ANY kind of fabric from silk to heavy duty demin and leather. My husband bought it for me for Christmas many moons ago. It's a GOOD machine (and wasn't CHEAP either!), but there is something up with the bobbin part of it.
Sometimes, just when I'm on a roll and VERY enthusiastic about my project-- the bobbin goes haywire. It starts to go "Clink-clink-clink" and I have to stop and pull the fabric out of the machine. The FRONT side stitching looks fine, but on the backside-- what a MESS! It looks like a huge RATS NEST! I have to rip it all out and fix the bobbin holder, then re-sew the seams. By the second or third time that happens, my enthusiasm has taken quite a beating. I think that's why I have so MANY UFO's!!! In all honesty, I HATE using a sewing machine. I prefer to stitch things by hand-- though some projects take FOREVER to do that way!!! ~~~ Tracy

As for posting a picture of my apron I have joined the UFO club(unfinished objects). When I came to the part where you stitch the rick rack along the neckline my machine gave out on me. I think the combination of thick rick rack, bias tape and fabric were just too thick for my inexpensive sewing machine. After breaking 2 needles and saying some not so good words I put it away and haven't wanted to sew since. I will get going again soon on another project and hope to finish that one with a new pack of needles I bought but I think I just got projected out after Christmas. Needless to say my daughter didn't get her apron for Christmas. Better luck to you all and happy apron sewing.

I'm so excited -- found the A is for Apron book via my library -- will be getting it through interlibrary loan. Always need more inspiration for sewing!!

Tracy: Join the club! I have tons of "started" projects all over the place too. Then I move on to something that interests me more, and put the old ones away. Sometimes years later I go through my stuff and finish the old projects. They seem new to me again then!

I'm such a scatter brained sew-er!!! I have half sewn projects ALL OVER the house!! I have an apron started, pj's that were SUPPOSED to be a christmas presant for my youngest son, dolls, quilts (I think there are FIVE of them started-- my FIRST one about 7yrs ago!!!), doll clothes, a nearly finsished wedding dress... (WHY? I have NO idea, just wanted to see if I could do it I guess) teddy bears that just need their arms and legs hand sewed on... sigh.... I guess my new years resolution SHOULD be to finish all those half finished projects!!!
Oh, and as for fabric... I have about 12 or 13 totes (and probably MORE stuffed in bags and boxes) of just about every kind of fabric ever MADE!!! Lately, I buy it for the sole purpose of making APRONS!!!! tsk! tsk!

kinkos is about 40 minutes from me. I think I will just bring the entire book with me and make them all when I am there. I just love most of the aprons in that book and have been collecting fabric for about 2 years that is all earmarked for aprons. That would be fun...aprons for months of fun sewing.

I got this last summer and there are some really cute patterns; my fave is a pinafore/smock apron that can be worn also as a top over a tank or tee. There is a cute frou-frou Marie Anoinette style that I could imagine Lucille Ball wearing for a cocktail party. Some aprons photographed in the book were made from Amy Butler fabrics, which I adore and they look too cute.
I had the patterns enlarged at Kinko's on their big blueprint copier for around $4. I have not had a problem w/yardage, but I also always buy extra to have leftovers to make yo-yo's.

It is a good little book! Like I said, the patterns for quite a few are online too. The one I want to make my daughter is online. I'll see if I ever get to it! :)

I borrowed this book from the library and now I need to buy it to add to my bookshelf. It is such a great little book.
I can't wait to try these cute aprons.

believe it or not, most of the patterns for this book are online on the website that has 50 new free apron patterns. (google "free apron patterns" and it is the one that has the new patterns on it.) It's exactly like the book. You will have to look through some of links though. I think the Lorelei one is on there, as are at least 5 or 6 others.

So Glad you pointed that out Kristin. I'll have to make a note of it in my book so I don't make the same mistake.
I ALWAYS buy more fabric than the patterns call for--- just 'cause I'm afraid I will mess up a piece when I'm cutting, or-- just as you say-- the fabric amounts are off. You can always get away with MORE fabric than you need, but you can't stretch the fabric to make more than you've got!! Can you post a picture of the Apron? We'd all LOVE to see it. ~~Tracy

Hi Girls,
I bought the book last week and was so excited to start making an apron for my daughter for Christmas. I took the pattern for the Lorelei apron to kinkos and had it copied for only $3.00. I either did something wrong or the pattern is wrong. It says you only need 1/4 yard of fabric for the contrasting neck and pocket fabric. I purchased all the fabric and notions but no matter how I lay it out 1/4 yard is not enough for those 2 pieces. I haven't had time to look online to see if there is a correction anywhere. After being frustrated I did what my grandma would have done and went to my stash to find a fat quarter of fabric that would match. Now instead of 2 fabrics it has 3 but it makes it look even more vintage. Hope no one else has this problem with any of the patterns they try. Happy Sewing,

Hi Jessie! Well, the book is tucked away in a cupboard right now-- along with all my OTHER sewing and craft books, so I haven't tried any of the patterns yet. It's kind of neat. Shows some vintage aprons, tells a little about each and how the "new" ones are created. If you love aprons, you might want to check it out. ~~~HUGS~~~ Tracy

I got this book too. Love it. I tried to enlarge a pattern for one I want to make my daughter. It took a while and A LOT of tape, but I think it is ok. Staples would charge like $20 to make an enlargment, and it would still have to be pieced by them. I'm too cheap!

You can do it Kelly! I'm not the greatest sew-er in the world either, but I do ok. I actually don't even READ the pattern directions-- for some reason they just don't make any sense to me! I DO look at the pictures though, and that really helps. I have made ALL KINDS of things (right down to a Wedding dress! Why? Just to see if I COULD!). My thing with sewing is that I HATE using a sewing machine!!! I know that sounds silly, but I really do HATE them!! I prefer to sew by hand. For ME it's very theraputic, but I CAN use a machine when I have to. (making curtains is one of those "Have to" things. I'll never make THOSE by hand AGAIN! LOL)
Amanda-- It is a REALLY cute book! I was so excited to get it. There are some REALLY CUTE aprons I'd like to make out of it, but I will have to take it to a photocopy shop and have THEM enlarge the patterns for me. I am soooo not "technilogically savvy." I just hope it doesn't COST a small fortune!

I just got this book too. I haven't made anything yet though. I am still new to sewing & haven't taken the plunge on making something larger from a pattern yet. (I tried to make a tote & I did ok, but one part was totally messed up.  ) I think I think too much @ it instead of just reading it the way it says and doing it. I really like they way the book is laid out & all the vintage aprons in there. Would have liked to try some of those! It is my goal to sew something this year.
