Posted - Jul 27 2008 : 08:54:01 AM Has anyone read these? My husband and I collected them back in the early 70's and they are full of wonderful experiences and homemade ways of doing things. They are the result of a school project to interview the country and mountain people in the southeast to record their stories and ways of doing things so they weren't lost forever. I think anyone in this group of gals would enjoy them. |

Posted - Jul 28 2008 : 8:14:47 PM I've read them too! I have a couple, and borrowed the rest from the Library. I didn't know there was a cookbook OR a Christmas book! I'd LOVE to read those! I wish they had more in depth explainations of how to actually DO the things though--- or am I forgetting what was actually IN them? Hmmm..... guess I'll have to take another look at them. ~~~Tracy

Posted - Jul 28 2008 : 5:47:40 PM Never heard of the books. But, I surely would like to check them out. I'll check around to see who may have them. Thanks for that idea. I love to read. Marly |

Posted - Jul 28 2008 : 10:44:49 AM YES! A must-have for everyone, I think. It always surprizes me who hasn't heard of/read them. I'll have to check our local library, and if they don't have them I'll recommend them. We have a few copies left, and have loaned out the others and lost track. I appreciate the posts on where to get them now. They really are a treasure to share with new generations. Very inspiring to go and collect stories, lore, wisdom, how-to from older generations before that valuable information or visiting is a lost opportunity.

Posted - Jul 28 2008 : 07:52:51 AM The Foxfire series of books are a must have. Contact your local library for an interlibrary loan to get started, your local bookstore or http://www.foxfire.org. You will visit each book again and again as a treasured friend. In a couple of months when the holiday rush begins to overwhelm you, pick up a copy of A Foxfire Christmas.

Posted - Jul 28 2008 : 06:14:38 AM I just unpacked ours last week! We had stuff in storage for 5 years and I was unpacking the boxes with books. I looked at my husband and said do we still want these? I looked inside one of them and said, oh yes we're keeping these. When I have time, I will have to re-visit them.

Posted - Jul 28 2008 : 03:48:11 AM i had them and loved them all as well. when i worked at the va with the wwII veterans we used them in a story telling group to try and stimulate memory and storytelling, those fellas were mostly all rural guys and had some of the neatest stories. i would read to them out of the book and then they would say, well thats not quite the way we did it.......and then a story would unfold

Posted - Jul 27 2008 : 8:13:18 PM I loved them too, but I don't know what happened to all mine, probably lost in a couple of cross country moves. I'm going to have to check the library and reread them. They are a national treasure....

Posted - Jul 27 2008 : 10:02:33 AM My parents had all of them when they first came out - I recently bought the first one. The knowledge in them is great, as well as the oral history parts. We are losing so much of our personal history, particularly as the country becomes more homogeneous - strip malls and franchises and all. (whoops, there goes a soap box topic for Amy Grace)

Posted - Jul 27 2008 : 09:17:16 AM I don't have all of them but I have 3 or 4 I think...they're wonderful! The kids used to get one for me every Christmas because they knew I was always trying to be self-sufficient and live off the land...except in those days there wasn't as much info available as now....they are timelss books! And the stories are so fascinating about the people! I'll have to dig them out and revisit them. Thanks for bringing up this topic!
