What have you ladies started the year off reading? I am presently reading "Four Seasons" by Mary Alice Monroe.

The problem with reading for me is that when I start a new book it is ALL I want to do. I guess I am just going to have to break down and wash some dishes.

I love her books too. I need to check to see if there are any new ones out since New Year's Quilt..I think that is the last one of hers that I have read.

Another good author is Jennifer Chiaverini; she writes a quilting series, similar to the Monica Ferris books. I've read quite a few and enjoyed them all.

If there Be Dragons was just okay. Not wonderful. I wasn't dissapointed by it..but it really wasn't my sort of book I guess. Very gushy mushy..not very deep..no mystery or surprizes or thought provoking stuff for me. I guess for some people it would strike more of a cord..just not my cup of tea. If anyone wants to read it..email me your address and I will send it out. It was mainly about a gal fighting her own "dragons" and being able to deal with new love...her first love. It was sweet..but I guess I wanted more story.

I just read Agusta Locke

Not what I expected, but I kept plugging through and finished it. There was a lot of remembering, and imagining done by the main charecter so that was hard to pick between the actual story and her mind. But I named our new horse after her... Her name was Gussie, short for Agusta so I just named the horse Gus lol
I'll get back with the author's name.. I'm terrible at remembering that...

well, no but I got a book called If There be Dragons by Kay Hooper while at the grocery store on the book rack. Not one I had heard of but is good so far...I got started and read the first 2 chapters last night. This is what the back says:
What was a woman like Brooke Kennedy doing running a guest lodge alone in the Montana wilderness? And why was her best friend so worried about her? Those were the questions Cody Nash asked himself after agreeing to cancel his tropical vacation to go on a mission of mercy into blizzard country. For the strong and self-assured woman he found didn't need or want his help- but she was in trouble. Brooke had isolated herself from the world for reasons she wouldn't or couldn't say. But Cody didn't need to be a psychic to sense that Brooke was afraid. Even more, her fear had intensified from the moment he arrived. Now, as a dangerous storm strands them together, Cody must learn the well-guarded secret of this beautiful, gifted woman if he can convince her to give him the one thing he needs to save her from a self-imposed exile: her trust.
Anyway...it will get me by until I get to that used book store. Or the library even better!

I feel somewhat silly with many of my book selections this year. I've been reading a lot of young reader's books. I've read the whole Harry Potter series (mainly so I could decide whether or not I would let my 7-year-old see the 6th movie that comes out just days after his 8th birthday), but then I re-read "Night", "Anna Karenina", and "The Good Earth". I've also read a couple of really good books about WWII, told by the soldiers who fought (and it's killing me that I can't remember the names of the books). Now, I'm reading the Anne of Green Gables series. I've seen the movies more times than I can remember, but have never read the books. And, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Anne of Green Gables, I decided that I would read all 8 books.

A friend recommended a series of psychological thrillers to me and I'm finally getting to read them. they are by Keith Ablow, he only wrote the 5. I guess now he's a psychologist on tv. They are intense with a lot of psychobabble in them. Think James Patterson with more psychology.

That is one of his that I havn't read yet....will be looking for it though. I didn't have a book to read this weekend (and canning in the pressure canner requires a book while I am waiting, right?) so I am reading one of my 12 year old son's books..it is called "The Ghost Brigade" and is about teenagers helping Brigham young in Salt Lake City during the pioneer days...a fun read..and not so "young" that it is silly. I will be done with it tonight for sure..then maybe I will have to either re-read something or search and see what the girls have..haha I am stopping at the used book store tomorrow for sure!

I am just finishing up Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. It has really made me think about how and where my food comes from. I haven't had much luck finding some of the other books that MaryJane references. I think I might have to go to a larger library like in Fort Wayne or South Bend. I don't want to buy the books until I read them first. Does anyone have any suggestions where I can find them or maybe someone has a couple that I can borrow?

I loved Tallgrass. What made it so interesting for me was that my OR Supervisor and friend for many years is from a Japanese-American family that experienced it first hand. Her family farmed around Moses Lake, WA. The government took their land, sent them by train to a camp in Wyoming and drafted her brothers. She was 8 years old. She said her parents were never the same after that. Very sad.

The only other book I've read by Sandra Dallas was The Persian Pickle Club. I'll have to read more of them.

I finished Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas. A very good book. I'm reading one now that all the Eastern Washington farmgirls should try to find and read. It's Atomic Farmgirl:growing up right in the wrong place by Teri Hein. I found it on my mom's bookshelf. The author was raised on a wheat farm near Fairfield. So far it's a great book.

I just got a new book "The story of Edgar Sawtelle" - started it about a week ago. Wonderful book, takes place near the Minnesota North woods. About a mute boy on a farm that is actually a dog kennel where they raise these fictitious dogs that are smart, intuitive and make wonderful companions. He lives with his parents, during the late 50's early 60's in this wonderful setting.

Though things do turn for the worse when his father's troubled brother shows up.

It is well written and the author is very good with the scenery/surroundings descriptions. Apparently this is his first novel.

I saw this book reviewed somewhere recently. The reviewer liked it too. I may put that on my mental list.

I'm reading Mary Chestnut's Civil War Diary. It's about 900 pages long! I thought I had reached the middle a few weeks ago, and no matter how many pages I read I still seem to be in the middle.

Celticheart, did you know that Ayaan Hirsi Ali lived in the Netherlands for a couple of years? Don't remember how many years exactly.

I am now still reading: "90 minutes in Heaven" and another one "Grieving Forward" written by Susan Duke.
It is about a mom )(Susan Duke) who lost her son due to a car accident, he was just 18.
It tells about how she coped with the grieve, the pain and the anger, with a lot of help from God and through prayer.

I received the book from the author, I know her daughter through another website I visit often.

I highly recommend the book if you are dealing with grief.
I still am. My mom passed away Sept. 2006 and my Oldest brother just 4 months later. I took care of my mom for at least 6 years, she suffered from severe, aggressive Dementia. I took care of her 25/8 so to say, and it was tough.
My brother passed away due to lung cancer, amongst other things. He had 3 bypass operations, lung cancer, other cancers, kidney failure and many other things, but the lung cancer got him in Jan. 2007

Sorry, that was off-topic, but important for the Grieving Forward book recommendation IMO!

I am reading The Sands of Windee by Arthur Upfield. He was an Australian writer who died in 1962. He wrote many mystery novels, which are really remarkable. They are beautifully written and give you a wealth of information about Australia, and it's people. I've read every one of his books since I was a kid, my parents introduced me to them, and I'm really loving this book, I am trying not to devour it in one evening....
