the new book "Animal Vegetable, Miracle, by Barbara Kingsolver? It is about eating locally and it's a very easy read with some great recipes. Wasn't sure where to post this - in the food, diet, or book forum, but we'll try it here. |

I read somewhere in the book, she was using honey in place of sugar. Still, I think even if you changed one thing in the way you aquire it, you are doing your part. Most people can't do it cold turkey. Ever little bit works. We have started small in changing how we get our milk, eggs and meat and a part of our fruit and veggie diet. Dropping chemicals as cleaning agents, is a big step forward and I applaud everyone here who is doing that.
So if you change one thing, that is a change for the better..

They mention in the book a few things that they couldn't get local like flour and sugar and such so they do still buy things like that at the store. They looked into flour but the local mill had the flour shipped in from out of state.

I just started it last night as well. Took me forever to get it I was # 3 in line on the waiting list at the library. So far I am enjoying it...haven't gotten to any recipes yet. I also heard somewhere that the family doesn't totally stick to the local-voire thing. But then who could goodness knows I could never go without chocolate or coffee!!!

I am reading it RIGHT NOW and I LOVE IT! It is a must read for anyone who eats food (I am assuming that is everyone) The first chapter I thought was a little mundane but the rest is soooooooo interesting. This is my first Barbara Kingsolver book. Here daughter also makes exerpts throughout that are so cute and refreshing.

Hello!
Bridge posted that she had read this back on June 4th. I just started it a few days ago-I'm on chapter 4 and I LOVE it! I'm probably biased, because I seem to love all of Barbara Kingsolver's books, but I think everyone should read this. A real eye-opener, and enjoyable to read as well.
