I am not a science fiction fan but my hubby is and i read all of Ann McCaffrey's dragon rider books and I loved them and now her son Todd is continuing them, just bought Dragon's Blood for him he liked it so next book for me is that one if I ever get done with

Goalieboy: Start with "A Game of Thrones" Book one of a song of ice and fire. I started out reading a graphic novel of his first called "the Hedge Knight", but it took place a number of years AFTER all the books in his Song of Ice and Fire series. I'm still slogging through the series (is it my imagination, or are the books getting longer than the previous one???). Well, rereading the first 3 in the series... I need to get my hands on the fourth! It's an epic saga. The characters are rivetting, and I spent many blurry-eyed work days as my evenings and wee-mornings were consumed reading these books. Enjoy! |

I have read the Seven Waters trilogy and It's great. Full of love, magic and family. Good stuff.

OOh Celtic Heart, you need to try reading Tailchasers Song and the dragonbone chair both by Tad Williams.
I love Tailchasers Song. It's about a cat.

I read a lot too! In high school I discovered sci-fi/fantasy novels. Read almost everything Anne McCaffrey! Currently reading George R.R. Martin. It's positively riveting! I'm also a sucker for certain Star Trek novels... Other authors I love: Tanya Huff, Peter S. Beagle, Ray Bradbury, J.R.R. Tolkien, Guy Gavriel Kay, Douglas Adams, David Eddings, Katherine Kurtz, Madeleine L'Engle, Mercedes Lackey, Orson Scott Card, Philip Pullman, Roald Dahl...

Those sound good Melissa. I'll look for those. Has anyone read any of the books in The Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier? Daughter of the Forest is the first one. Celtic Fantasy I think. Very good books.

I grew up in a science fiction/fantasy house. And since I haven't seen it posted yet must must read "The Daughter of the Empire" series. The doesn't stop it keeps you going the whole time on the edge of your seat. It's three books altogether, Daughter of the empire, Servant of the Empire and Mistress of the Empire. Written by Raymond Fiest and Janny Wurts. One od my favorites, I know I'll read it again one day. I'm always looking for good fantasy books.

Erik..lol thanks...I'm a collector of quotes and love to use them all the time...I think if I put every single quote I loved in my signature (now that I think about it!) it would get out of hand!!!

Gee we had a great creative staff meeting today. If you hadn't already figured it out, MJ has it together like nobody else (duh!). I think we were all starting to drift a little during her book tour but now we're centered again and in full gear to produce sommore books of our own.
You gurls mention all the writers i've been meaning to get to forever: Tad Williams, Robert Jordan, Annie McCaffery, Mercedes Lackey but never seem to get to. I wish i had a whole nother lifetime just to read. All true wealth may be biological, but i think the real currency of the world is stories.
All the girls in my family sure love Harry Potter. Last winter my brother-in-law came home from work to find my sister curled up, under the covers and nose deep into a Hogwart's story. She said he stomped in and bellowed (with a wink) "#@%%!!, are you in bed with that #@%%!! Harry Potter again???"
They say J.K. Rowling may be our first female billionare. I hope so. Anyone that can get kids to read 700 page books with gusto deserves to be crowned Emperess of Everything.
So, to answer your question, Clare, Mirror Dance isn't the first book, it's about halfway through the series. And like i said, i'll loan you my copy if ya want, provided you understand the dorks on the cover have NOTHING to do with the actual characters featured in the book. Ooh - Tad Williams, great stuff! Isn't that the guy who also wrote the Dragonbone Chair series?
Also Robert Jordan - can't beat that series. The guy can paint characters unbelievably well.
Joel Rosenberg - Keepers of the Hidden Ways series
Terry Goodkind has a great series, but it can be a little dark and harsh. I liked it though, reminds me of reality (lol)
Otherwise, a few titles I can recall offhand:
The Last Unicorn (Peter David) - child safe
Weave World (don't recall name of author)
Ursula LeGuinn writes some good stuff too. |

The first books are called "Shards of Honor" & "Barrayar" which later was combined into "Cordillia's Honor" Cordillia is the sanest person i have ever met, and she ain't even real. She and Aral have a boy named Miles, who kinda takes over the series starting with "The Warrior's Apprentice" and "The Vor Game" which was later combined into "Young Miles" I'll put together the rest soon (we're on break from a meeting) but if you really want "Cordillia's Honor" i'll mail it to ya. One warning: The cover art is awful. Even Bujold thinks so. What's weird is the editions in other countries like England and Russia and France are just beautiful. So.... whups, gotta go. |

Erik - you have the best recommendations! You had me when you said they were your mom's comfort food, especially WHY, cuz boy-howdy, can I relate to THAT!!!!  And you are definately right when restating that "all wealth is biological". I'll be repeating that to my kids, too! Now, off to my library bookmark to see if they're in stock!

Lois McMaster Bujold is my favorite. My Mom reads the whole Vorkosigan series over and over (there's about 12 of them). It's her comfort food, especially if she's overly depressed about Bush and his cronies. It's a universe that makes sense to her, even though most of the context is military. So i picked them up to get closer to her, yaknow, to be able to talk about something she loves. The result is I now read them over and over, my kids read them over and over and we have all kinds of pets named after characters in her books. It's not science-tech, it's all character driven.
When my young daughter finished the first two books she climbed into my lap and cried and cried. When i was finally able to ask why she was crying she sobbed that she'd NEVER in real life meet a man like Aral and it just wasn't fair.
There's one quote i think ya'll might like, from Aral. In this scene he's being trasported to a hospital because he's having a heart attack and he's with his son, who he tells: "All true wealth is biological." I love that quote. Sometimes i even tell my kids that when they're not expecting it.
Anyways, if you like to fall in love with peoples and carry them around with you in your heart, there's lots to like in Ms Bujold's books. Her character's are sane, quirky, believable (even the baddies) and endearing. |
