Posted - Jun 29 2015 : 04:52:22 AM Isabelle came down with a slight rash yesterday morning. She also developed a sore throat. Going by where the rash is the only research I have found that matches her symptoms is West Nile fever, a milder form of the virus. She could have been bit before camp, as it says within 14 days. It isn't contagious person to person. She said that she only got bit once at camp (that she knows of). She is ok, just feels lousy. Please pray it doesn't get worse, as it can do some nasty things to the brain. She is also a bit achy and has a mild fever.

Posted - Jun 30 2015 : 06:07:39 AM Alicia, hope Isabelle is starting to feel better. One little tip I remember from my daughter's old fashioned doctor way back 30 years ago, is to throw out her toothbrush and get a new one. It made sense to me, so thought I'd share. Hugs!!

Posted - Jun 30 2015 : 05:46:01 AM Winnie - you know I hope they did the regular strep test! I know my doctor's office didn't when Aly was tested for it awhile back ago. Poor baby girl was so sick! She too had the symptoms, but the rapid strep came back negative. And she too was put on an antibiotic. It wasn't until I called back to get the rests that I found out they never ordered the regular test! It wasn't her regular doctor that had seen her, so I'm not sure if that is what happened, or what... but this momma was not happy!
Alicia - how is Isabella feeling today??? Praying she is much much better! You took her at the first sign of onset, so hopefully it will not get too bad!

Posted - Jun 30 2015 : 05:39:47 AM Alicia, I am glad you were able to get an appointment and start treatment for Isabella right away. Hopefully after a day or two of antibiotics, she will be feeling much better too. As for your boys, do not let them drink from the same glass she does (like a bathroom glass) or use the same towels etc. It might also help to get a bottle of alcohol gel and have everyone use it during the day in addition to lots of hand washing. Be sure you use it before eating. Strep is most easily spread from contact with the secretions from the patient's mouth so just sort of think of that strategy. Be sure to contact doctor's office if you don't hear from them in the next day or so for the 24 strep test results. In the presence of a negative rapid strep test in the office, you just want to know for sure if strep is the problem you are dealing with. If she is clinically better, meaning no fever, sore throat better, rash going away etc., then you know treatment is on the right track. Strep is easily spread from person to person so if one of the boys start getting feverish, sore throat, feeling awful, take them into doctor right away for testing and antibiotic. Don't assume it is a regular cold with sister having classic strep symptoms. And whatever you do, give Isabella ALL OF THE ANTIBIOTIC PRESCRIBED! It is easy to assume once the person feels better to just stop the medicine but that is the worst thing you can do. Only stop the medication if she starts having a reaction to it and be sure you take her in to the doctor to confirm the problem so she can have that placed on her medical chart and be given a different drug to finish clearing up the infection. Step can right to the heart and untreated result in serious damage to heart valves.
Prayers for all of you to get through this and healing! Keep us posted.
We are so lucky in this day and age that we have an easy way to detect and treat strep infection!

Posted - Jun 29 2015 : 11:11:43 AM Oh, that is so good, Alicia. Not that she has strep, but that at least it is treatable. Hug that sweetie for me, and make sure she gives one to you for me, too! :) Keep us posted! I hope she is doing better really soon! I'll still be praying! Hugs - Nini

Posted - Jun 29 2015 : 08:56:56 AM so even though the strep test came out negative the doctor says that the rash on her belly is a classic strep rash. And he said the test misses 4 percent. So we're going with strep.

Posted - Jun 29 2015 : 07:14:47 AM I'll be praying, too, Alicia. SO sorry she is going through this. Is she still at camp? Has she been seen by the physician? What is being done for her? I feel so bad for her. If it is West Nile, that can become very serious and scary very quickly. I am sure I don't have to tell you this, but even if it is a virus for which there is no medicine, the effects of the virus on her body could be devastating if they go untreated, so getting her to a doctor or even a hospital really might be the best thing for her. I'm sure you must be very worried. I'll be praying for you, too, sister! Hugs and love - Nini
