Oh, Judy! I do hope you're feeling better today! And yes, the girls are right, cranberry juice and PLENTY of water. And Virginia is right, this is one situation that calls for antibiotics - don't even give that a second thought. If the antibiotic isn't strong enough, it will just keep coming back again and again and again. And if it gets really bad, you'll start passing blood. You don't want to mess with that, sister. I once had to be hospitalized and have a catheter because it got so bad. Please just get treatment. That's no fun at all.

There have been conflicting reports about the healing power of cranberry juice with respect to UTI's over the years, but it has always served me well. And the reason you want to drink plenty of water is because - how can I put this - it reduces the concentration of the urine in your bladder so that it won't burn as much. It also helps remove toxins. Yes, you still have to go a lot, and yes it will burn, but at least it won't be a highly concentrated urine which will REALLY burn. Thankfully, I haven't experienced one in years, but I do well remember how awful they can be. I will be praying for you, for sure!

Hugs -

Nini

Yes to pure (wicked tart) cranberry juice and lots of water. Herbs are lovely for general support, but UTIs are serious infections that can get much worse if not treated, and no herb that I know of really packs enough punch; that's not how herbs usually work, anyway.

Much as you hate to take prescription medicines (I don't blame you!) UTIs usually respond very well to antibiotics and I would recommend you talk to your doctor about finding one that won't interfere with your other meds. Some kinds of antibiotics (penicillins, especially) can wind up giving you a yeast infection as the result of all the good and bad bacteria being killed off. Your doctor should be able to work with you on avoiding that.

You're in my heart. I used to get UTIs a lot and I know how awful they are. Be sure to wear loose clothing, by the way, both to prevent UTIs and to help speed your recovery from this bout. All the best!

Yep, water and cranberry juice. And don't forget a little extra rest if you can manage it so you body can dedicate some additional energy to your healing. Praying!

Judy, prayers!!!! Also look into a good probiotic. Chances are if you already take a lot of meds, your gut flora needs a boost. Otherwise meds don't work efficiently.

Yes we do not normally drink a lot of store bought juice for that reason. But we do juice our fruit at times. Echinacea works good but you do have to take quite a bit to allow the constituents to work. I also make a comfrey herbal infusion weekly to strengthen bladder and stave off infection.

Judy
I sure hope you have relief soon.

good point Kelly! Try not to drink cranberry drink, or cranberry juice mixed with other juices, because normally it is only around 5% cranberry juice! We always try to drink 100% unsweetened cranberry juice - it is quite tart, but works great!

Kelly - I didn't realize that echinacea tincture would help with UTIs... though it makes sense, lol.

Yes drink a lot. I agree with Shannon, drink cranberry juice but do not drink juice that is sweet. Sugar and corn syrup feed bacteria. The more you drink, you might be able to flush it out. Also echinacea tincture is a good thing to take if you have it. It is antibacterial. I am sending up prayers, those things are painful.

Judy,

Will definitely be praying! The things I have found to help include drinking LOTS of water and cranberry juice, as well as taking D-Mantose. You can find those type of capsules in health food stores... it is essentially the part of the cranberry that helps fight UTIs, at a high dose. I also eat a lot of raw garlic (if you mince it and put it in a spoon of honey three times a day, it isn't too bad). I will say, from a nurse stand point, if you start running a fever, you may need an antibiotic... it can travel up into your kidneys, and that can be a beast to fight!
