Hi Heather,
Sorry to learn of your unemployment. I see you have a journalism background and community program experience. Hmmm...why don't you take your resume and visit Elko Visitors and Convention Center, asking if you could have a few minutes with the director. Introduce yourself, and mention that you are looking for an opportunity to perhaps assist them with their marketing brochures, visitor tracking, or any other work they may need utilizing your journalism skills. I worked for a visitor and conference bureau in California, and we were so busy. Often the director has so many projects going to attract and track visitor response. Many press releases are mailed out to magazines, newspapers, etc. Also, relationships with the local attractions, lodging, dining etc are built and often lead to other opportunities. The Elko VCB may want to hold an event for all the tourist related businesses in the area. Ask them if they are planning anything like that and offer your availability for hire. If they decline that they need any more employees, just ask..."Who do you know that may be hiring using my skill set?" The third party approach often works. Also, introduce yourself to the local newspaper. Just get dressed professionally, resumes in hand, and knock on doors emphasizing you are looking for opportunities to use your journalism and event organizational skills. Be operationally specific in your accomplishments. Smile, always thank them for their time, and if they say they don't have a need, be sure to tell them you are glad you had the opportunity to meet them. And always, ask "Who do know that may be interested in my skill set for hire?"
Be sure to mail them a hand-written note for their time in meeting with you even if you were not offered an opportunity. You may want to make some personal business cards to give out with your name, phone and skill set listed. In the meantime, after pounding the streets...use your downtime to get back to peak health, nuture your spirit, grieve the loss of your work, let it go. We have so many jobs in a lifetime now due to the rapid changes in society.

Dear Farm and Prayer Girls:
Thank you for all your support, thoughts and prayers regarding my job loss. It was such a shock but sometimes events such as this make us gather our forces and reconsider our gifts and talents. I have applied for unemployment insurance (first time ever), polished up my resume, applied for positions and hardest of all, have asked if anyone knows of anything opening up. I live in a small town, 25,00, where jobs are tight, but God can do anything! Meanwhile, I have stayed busy gardening, cooking, baking from scratch...all of which I have always done but it is good to have some time to put effort into the things I love. I do have an interview May 10 for a Circulation Manager at our library. I also applied for a Business Editor position at our paper but was not offered the job. I have a background in journalism and community programming and I love working with people. Please continue to pray for my job need. Thank you so much. I will keep y'all posted. Regards, Heather |

Heather, I am so sorry you are going thru this. I had the same thing happen in 2009 right before Christmas. It was devastating. I applied for unemployment as soon as I could. I let all my friends know so they could keep an ear open. I polished my resume and applied for everything - even things I didn't know if I could do just to get experience in job interviews. It had been 9 years since I had changed jobs. We also sold everything that we didn't need or use - including my pasture candy (horses). It's been a long tough road, but we made it through. I now have a pretty good job that I like (pay is way less), but we are learning to live on less. Keep the bills paid and eliminate things you don't have to have. Talk with you insurance agent and have them reduce where they can and still keep you covered.
If you sell your art, start cranking it out and listing it on etsy. It only costs 20 cents to list and a small selling fee. Good luck to you - keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. You can email me if you need to. We are all here to support you.

What an awful thing to have happen! I feel for you, especially having no idea it was coming. Hopefully you are eligible for unemployment compensation while you seach for another job and you can at least have some income to work with. Currently l work in a Human Resources department, so I encougage you to update and put together a good resume and start applying online for any and every position that you qualify for. Most employers are doing only online applications where you upload your resume so it will help you to have all that ready. I have no idea how Nevada works, but Florida has regional workforce offices with a variety of helpful services to unemployed. They can sometimes help you find new employment because they work with various business partners through federal funding to seek qualified people to fill openings. In short, the workforce office has already identified work opportunities and are looking to work with qualified candidates. These workforce offices also have federal funds to help unemployed get extra training to boost their competitiveness. So for example, if there was a training certificate program at a local technical center or community college, you could get the tuition paid for by the workforce board. This extra training might be the boost you need for that new position.
