My DD's dog Baxter was just diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer. She is devastated. She rescued him over five years ago from a high-kill shelter. They said he was aggressive. The previous owners kept him in a kennell all the time and the kids in the house threw stuff at him. My DD worked with him quite a bit and he has turned out to be the best dog ever. He is so caring and concerned for everyone and is so eager to please. He is also her guardian when her DH is deployed. Please say a little prayer for him. They have just started chemo and will know in a couple of weeks if he is responding.

Baxter has been up and down over the last couple of months. Right now he is in remission! Thank you for all your prayers!
Here is a recent picture of Baxter. My DD and SIL took him on a boat ride to celebrate!

NEWEST UPDATE:
Baxter is no longer in remission and his lymph glands have swollen again. They tried a new chemo protocol yesterday and he did not take it very well. Throwing up and shaking all night. My DD took him back to the cancer center and they gave him fluids and anti-nausea medication. He was there all day and my DD went and sat in the kennel with him. They stabilized him and she brought him home. If he starts suffering badly she has a vet standing by. She is very upset so prayers for her and Baxter are appreciated. We knew this day was coming but you are never really ready.

The last photo of my DD and Baxter. He started really failing at midnight last night. They carried him to the Vet and helped him cross the bridge. He will be forever in our hearts. My DD is taking it really hard today.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I am praying that you will feel better soon. Losing a loved family member is so very hard. When my Clara passed over the bridge I cried for her for nearly 3 months. She was there for me always. I have since had to my sweet Katie go over the bridge and she was such a sweetheart. Just remember that many will not understand your pain but that is okay because there are many of us who understand.

Hugs,

Nancy

Thank you my dear sisters for all the prayers for my DD concerning Baxter. Every day it gets a little better. She had him cremated and brought his ashes home. She put his collar and favorite toy along with some pictures into a shadow box. They are looking for a nice urn to keep his ashes in. My DD got a tattoo of the exact replica of his paw print on her wrist with some nice words and her DH got a tattoo of Baxter on his shoulder. The artist did a wonderful job and I will post a photo soon.

My love and thoughts are with your daughter--this is SUCH a tough decision. But the right one--I wish we could decide similarly for our human loves. Remembering this boy as I see in the above pictures, whole and healthy.

Godspeed, Baxter.

Diane-
I am so sorry for your family's pain. We too had a beloved Boxer- named Buffy, whom we lost just over 2 years ago. We since rescued another dog, but no one could ever replace our Buffy- she was a very special part of our family and always will be.
I feel your pain and will pray for comfort for all of you.
Hugs,

What a beautiful dog! He will be waiting for you up there in heaven and I am sure he is so happy now. Thanks for sharing this. I have had to go through this various times with various pets that I have had, including an iguana, but I know that I will see them all again! Blessings and prayers your way!

So sorry, Diane. Losing a beloved pet is some of the worst and deepest pain there is. Baxter found love and the real 'dogs life' with you all.

Marly,
I am OK, thanks for asking. The other day I was at the pet food warehouse and saw a boxer and started bawling!
My DD and her DH are taking one day at a time. My DD calls daily just to cry and reminisce. She is making a shawdowbox memorial to him and they are getting tatoos to memorialize Baxter. What can I say, she was really close to that dog.

I wish I could send a hug through e-mail. I have a fourteen year-old boxer and they are the best dogs. Baxter knew he was loved and that's what counts.

My heart goes out to your daughter and all who loved Baxter. My sweet doxie Barney developed lymphoma when he was only 3. I went through the exact same thing. We just adored him. He was chocolate and tan and had these really long ears and these eyes that were just so soulful. I found the swollen nodes and I knew right away what it was. I waited a couple of weeks cause I just didn't want the vet to say it out loud. Then we went the same route, the chemo and the pills, we did everything. He lasted a year but the last few weeks he was not himself. I took him for a chemo treatment and he was sitting in the front seat as usual, but this time he didn't start to whine as we neared the vet. (he hated to be left, even though they adored him) I had a sinking feeling then. He died as soon as they took him back for treatment. They never even started. I got the call on my cell almost as soon as I left. He was ready I guess, but it so broke my heart. I wish I could hug and comfort your daughter. It is just so heart breaking. But, she knows in her heart that they did everything they could for Baxter and that he was so happy to spend his last days with those he loved and loved him so much. It will take some time and she needs to let it out. They will never forget him. He'll be waiting for them. This I know.

Hugs Mary Jane

It has been hard to comfort my DD over the phone. She lives in SC and I am in WI. I have been down there many times and enjoyed Baxter so much. Thank you for all the kind wishes. I have shared this site with her and hope it comforts her.

Thank you all for your prayers and kind words. I sent them on to my daughter. They are taking it one hour at a time. He is not eating or drinking, but my DD was a vet tech and can give him fluids under his skin. She has a very good friend that is a vet that is standing by when they feel the time is right. Her DH is a drill sergeant and works long hours but is home this evening to spend it quietly together with Baxter. The other two dogs seem to know. My DD is taking it very hard. All your words help us greatly.
