Where do I begin? I haven't been on for a few weeks; many of you know my Dad went into the hospital on April 8, with pneumonia, coma, and has battled various setbacks for 12 weeks now, being in intensive care twice. On June 12 my mom had a fall and a heart attack and was diagnosed with Parkinson's and thus has been in hospital ever since. For a time both of them were in intensive care a few rooms apart. Mom's prognosis is that she will not be able to live at home, has to go into long-term care.

I got a call at 7:30 am on June 30 that the nurse just coming on shift had found my dad passed away, apparently in his sleep. I feel so bad that he was all alone, but they did not see anything during the night to alert them to call us in. The night of June 29th was the big Grade 12 graduation night for my daughter and his other granddaughter--I think he held on until he knew they had their graduation nights. He was so frail and weak. The last time I saw him was Sunday the 27th (I live over an hour's drive away), and I spent the next two days looking for nursing homes for Mom in various areas of Ontario due to the long waiting lists.

So we have had to make arrangements to have no funeral at the moment until Mom is well enough to come out of the hospital. There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Many of you have sent prayers during Dad's illness--thank you so much. Please pray for us that we can all get through this. I know God doesn't give you a burden that's more than you can bear, but I think we've got quite a lot right now.

Your farmgirl sister,
Lori

Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts and prayers. The doctors say Mom can come out for an afternoon pass (she'll be in a wheelchair the whole time) so we are hoping to have the visitation, service and burial on Saturday, July 10. I doubt Mom will be able to go to the cemetery, though.

This is so much harder, because Mom is not going to be coming home, so we have had to give notice on their apartment and get everything out of there by the end of August. It feels like we can't even properly lay Dad to rest because we are having to work on cleaning out their apartment, with limited time and everyone working full-time. Never mind settling an estate!

We did spend some time yesterday finding old photos, and I was up until the wee hours this morning scanning photos and trying to get that nice for the visitation and service.
