Posted - Apr 22 2010 : 3:07:51 PM Can I ask you to say a prayer for my dad? He is 75 and has been in the hospital since April 8, with severe pneumonia in both lungs. He is in the Critical Care unit, on a ventilator (since April 11), and was heavily sedated for 8 days, then they removed his sedation on April 19 to try to get him to wake up, but he has not woken up yet. They will be doing a CT scan to see if he has had a stroke or not. Also, his kidneys failed on the weekend, so he is on dialysis now, possibly permanently.
If he can pull through this (and it's a very fine line right now) he has a long road of recovery ahead of him.
Any prayers would be greatly appreciated.
Your farmgirl sister, Lori

UPDATE MAY 28, 2010 Thank you everyone for your prayers, whether you posted or not, because my dad pulled out of the coma about a week ago! He still cannot speak, because he has a tracheotomy connection, but he is trying desperately to tell us something. He was moved out of intensive care 2 days ago, and is now on a medical ward floor. Hopefully he will not get another new infection. He has sustained kidney damage and so needs dialysis 3X per week. He is incredibly weak (cannot even move his head to readadjust on the pillow) but is able to move his arms and toes a little. Yesterday I made him smile and he raised his eyebrows at something I said, at the right moment, too, so I know he was understanding me. And when I had to leave, he made little kissing sounds at me, he wanted to kiss me goodbye.
So, again, thank you, and he does still need every prayer we can offer to keep him on the road to recovery.
Lori

Posted - May 10 2010 : 05:10:32 AM Saw Dad yesterday--no movement at all except for a little mouth movement once when I was talking with the nurse. He did not turn his head, no eye movement, either. I even tried touching his feet to see if he would react--nothing. They say this is movement without purpose, when he does have any little facial movements.
They have tried starting to wean him off the ventilator, and he does breathe on his own for several hours, but it seems to tire him.
Sure wish they could figure out why he won't wake up. They would like to do an MRI but cannot because he has a metal stent in him from a previous surgery. The neurologist is coming in today to have a second look at him.
This is three weeks now, with no sedation. The doctors say this is not the drugs now, they have long since cleared from his system. He is getting dialysis three times a week.

Posted - May 05 2010 : 5:32:00 PM Could you burn or tape something with your family's voice talking to him with positive things. I have heard that positive suggestion is very good for people in your dad's situation. It could say things like you are getting better dad. We see an improvement. The kids can't wait to see you. We are planning an event and we want you well enough to come. etc. It surely couldn't hurt. I think the music is a good idea too. |

Posted - May 05 2010 : 09:07:17 AM Thanks for the prayers, everyone. Dad is still struggling. Some days we hear something positive, then the next it's very bad. He now has side-to-side head movement, blinking, and a little mouth movement. But he has no gag reflex, which is not good. No sounds, and no hand or foot movement yet.
I left the cd player there for him, and the nurses have been playing Shania Twain and Alan Jackson for him. Last night I burned 6 more mixed cds, some relaxing nature sounds (Solitudes) and more country music he likes. I am going down tonight for a big meeting with his doctors. They now want to put his feeding tube directly into his stomach. This will require surgery in the OR.
Thanks again, Lori

Posted - Apr 29 2010 : 09:18:54 AM Lori, I am so sorry he's not gotten any better. I will be praying for him and your family. My dad died when I was just 18. I miss him so much. My aunt sent me a CD that she had made of my dad singing and playing the piano. I love it. It took me almost a year to listen to it. One day me and my mom sat in here and put the CD in and listened to it. We both just cried and cried. He had a beautiful voice. He was music teacher and chior director most of his life. He always did the Mesiah every year. I hope and pray your dad pulls through this.
Hugs, Kris

Posted - Apr 29 2010 : 09:14:46 AM My dad still has not woken up--I asked the nurse the other night if this was a coma, and she said "absolutely"--strange, no doctor has ever said that word to us. He did have sepsis, too, which probably was the cause of the extended fever (9-10 days), blood pressure drop and kidney faillure.
His white blood cell count is good, he is showing a little improvement in the pneumonia on an xray, but last night his ventilation had to be increased, and his BP was high. He is totally unresponsive when you talk to him, or touch him. It's so hard to see him like that.
Please ladies, if your dad is still alive, don't take anything for granted. I had no idea he would go down so quickly.

Posted - Apr 24 2010 : 07:03:01 AM Thank you, everyone, for your prayers and support. As of this morning Dad still has not woken up. They did do a CT scan and it does not show any signs of a stroke. A neurologist is being called in now to see why he's not waking.
I am going to the hospital after work today (it's a little over an hour drive from home).
