Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 09:55:59 AM Yesterday my buck got out and ate some rhododendron leaves and this morning I found him throwing up. It was every where. He likes to crawl under the fence so that is how he gets out ( we are going to fix that). So right now I am giving him plenty of fresh water, hay, and brush. I'm adding baking soda to his water too. I'm going to stop giving him grain too. So if any of you belive in praying for animals please pray that he will be alright. And also pray that I will do the right things to help him. I just feel that everything is not going right at all. My doe is in heat and I really wanted to breed her this month. My other goat might be pregnant. I haven't gotten them wormed yet, My gain supplie got wet, and now I have a sick goat. Sorry, I just needed to vent. Thanks! Hugs, Channah P.s. Sorry about my spelling, when I'm stressed I just can't think.

Posted - Nov 04 2009 : 11:01:13 AM Thank you for the info Tracy! It's really hard for him to keep anything down. I give hime water and stuff and in like 5 minutes he throws it up. Poor guy! I just feel so bad for him. Me and my dad have been rubing his stomach and trying to listen for any gurgling and squeek sounds and we hear them every know and then. I was wondering about the Charcoal too. I might give that a try. I'm giving him these's recipe that I found on the Goat world website. here's the link http://www.goatworld.com/health/plants/antidotes.shtml. And he's really cold too. I just feel so bad for him. Thank you all for your addvice! Hugs, Channah

Posted - Nov 04 2009 : 09:44:44 AM Lisa and Kris had some VERY good advice Channah, and all the prayers of the ladies WILL help your little friend.
There are poducts you can find at some feed stores that contain "Activated Charcoal" That's one thing that is recommended for treating poisoning. You might also be able to get it from your vet.
I went through something very similar with one of my rams several years ago. He was poisoned by some bad wormer, but I didn't know about the charcoal thing then, so I never tried that. I do know that many Vets use it for poisoning, so it must work. Might be worth trying.
The most important thing to do is keep him hydrated and keep his electrolyts up. You also have to be VERY careful of keeping his gut functioning. When a goat's (or sheep's) rumin shuts down, that's when the REAL trouble begins. Listen to his belly and see if he has any gut sounds. (the gurgle and squeek sounds-- listen to one of your other goats and you'll know what I'm talking about) If you don't hear anything and his belly is rigid, you better call a vet QUICK and ask them what to do. Otherwise, you might try mixing up some gator aid powder, yogurt with Acidopholis cultures, and a squirt of rumin stimulator (there are several brands. You can find them at the feed store and they usually aren't that expensive)
If you have a drench gun for the gator aid/yogurt mix, that's great! If not, I used a turkey baster and it worked just as well. Just be careful not to get the liquid into his lungs. That can cause "Mechanical pneumonia" which has no cure and WILL send him on his way to heaven! (been there before. very sad) Last but not least, just keep praying. God doesn't like to see his little animals suffer any more than he likes to see US suffer!
Hope all works out for your little goat boy. Sending out EXTRA prayers for you both! God bless ~~~ Tracy

Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 1:42:06 PM That happened to one of my goats years ago. She got in either some ivy or azalea or rhody, not sure what. But she was throwing up. Never saw a goat throw up but it was awful. I thought for sure she was going to die but she got better. I called the vet and he said there was nothing he could do for her. I can't remember what I did but she got over it. That is so dangerous for goats. Usually they won't touch stuff that's not good for them. But every once in awhile they will and they get sick. I sure hope he gets well soon. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Make sure he has plenty of water if nothing else. I think charcoal helps clean them out, too.
Good luck and I will be praying he gets over this soon. I know how you feel about the poor sick fella.

Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 1:24:53 PM Thank you all so much! He is still not doing very well. He's still throwing up and is weak. I'm trying to get fluids in him with a syringe, and he's drinking it. So thats really good. We are pretty sure that he has rhododendrem poisoning. So please still pray for him. I'm staying with him alot and am talking to him, singing songs, and reading to him. I know it sounds silly but I think it comforts him to hear my voice. Thank you all again for your prayers! Hugs, Channah
