My dad is fighting pneumonia, kidney problems and heart issues. Your prayers are appreciated.

He's on a "soft mechanical" diet now and this has made a huge difference in his state of mind. He is having a high white cell, low platelet count problem right now but they are looking at releasing him perhaps Monday or Tuesday if better to a Skilled nursing facility for intensive physical therapy for 28-42 days. He is so much better, and I am thankful, but so weak it makes me just sick.

Brenda I agree with your dad's dr. Grouchy is a good thing. Just encourage him to understand the need for the thickened liquids is to keep him from choking on fluids and ending up with pneumonia. He surely doesn't need that right now. I'm so glad to hear he's grumpy. Trust me this is a good sign.

Brenda, I just read this and am so sorry your father was back in ICU. I'm glad to hear he is some better now and in the step down unit. There were times throughout my mom's illness that they had to thicken her fluids too, so they wouldn't go down wrong. You all will be in my prayers and I hope he continues to get better. I think the grouchiness is a good sign too.

After many, many days in the hospital (too many, Dad says) Dad is finally in stepdown and he is really grouchy and mad.... Seems the treatments they are giving him for his lungs are very uncomfortable and he has lost the ability to swallow properly, so instead of water, sprite, etc. he gets his liquids thickened with cornstarch so they don't "go down the wrong tube" and aggravate the lung problems. The dr. thinks that being grouchy is a good sign, when he was in ICU and fighting for his life, he didn't have the strength to fight off the treatments, now that he is getting mad it is a sign he is actually recovering some of his strength.

Thanks to you girls for your prayers.

Thanks, all. I'm just getting ready to go back up to the hospital, he was on dialysis again this morning, my sister talked to the doc and there isn't much hope for recovery, just trying to figure out what he wants and how to make him comfortable.

Praying for comfort for all of you. It's so hard to find the right words at this time for you. I wish I was there to hold your hand and be a comfort. I am so sorry that your dad is suffering.

Brenda I know there are no words at times like this, I just wish I was close enough to just sit with you. Offer a shoulder or just hold your hand quietly.

Email me your address and I will send you a hankie!

So sorry, Melody June

I'm so sorry, Brenda. I'll be thinking of you all. Whatever the outcome, I'll be praying for your dad to be in good hands at the hospital.

We called the squad for Dad last Wednesday and he's been in ICU ever since.

He may not make it and wants to "go home" - either here or his eternal home- he definitely doesn't want to be in hospital.

We are waiting to hear if he has to go on a ventilator this afternoon, he's started dialysis.

It is hard to know what to pray for at this point. I know that God does hear prayers and has a plan for my Dad. Please pray for Dad to be comforted and also my stepmom who is having a hard time as well.

Dad's been home for a week, sorry I haven't posted but haven't had much time to get online.

He's using a walker most of the time, a cane part of the time, and yesterday he walked a few steps without any support at all, so he is gaining strength every day.

He's going to have to have physical therapy for several weeks yet, but we are all rejoicing and praising God for his recovery, and for the doctor who figured out what the problem was.

Thank you for your prayers and concern.

I am so happy to report they put Dad in step-down today. He is off the ventilator and seems to be recovering rapidly, although quite tired tonight.

Thanks so much for your prayers, I am sure they made a difference.

Finally, Dad seems to be improving.

After treatment from bacterial pneumonia, and various other infections, and he failed to improve, they finally realized that he is suffering from Amiodarone (a drug used in heart conditions for fibrillation) toxicity, and has interstitial pneumonitis and is still on vent.

They aren't any clinically provent treatments for this, but reports of a 50% success rate treating with steroids, so have started this therapy. The doctor said 3-4 days to know if it will work, but so far so good, we are very encouraged. I am sure your prayers have helped, I know I was supported and encouraged by them.

Thanks everyone. See my next post in Health Matters forum.
