Relatives of mine from generations back lost their home Sunday just over the hills, out in the country. Luckily all were at church, and the kids off to college or starting life away from home. Went by last night and they were rounding up kitties and chickens and thankful for eachother. Cuddled warm with the support of our community. Thank goodness.

They are going to rebuild, but it will take awhile I think. With this weather...so cold the water was freezing in the firetrucks. But the house was beyond saving by the time it was reported...the drawbacks of country life. My generations-back uncle built it for my generations-back aunt when they came out here in a wagon, not having train fare, with a newborn baby. Can you just imagine? The things we overcome.

Here's my thought: They aren't ready yet for "things" and some things will be just memories. But I thought if I could start gathering seeds...they always had a garden...and the trees were so badly damaged by the fire they will all have to come down...it was a beautiful spot...If you have some seeds to share I could set by, or a recipe card to send along, I would put together a basket to keep and deliver in Feb. when thoughts turn to planting and fresh starts... If you are interested in helping with this, please e-mail me. With all the generations of family that went into that home, I thought this sort of farmgirl family touch would help create some new memories.

Thanks so much.

:) You're so sweet! I'll e-mail you and pass on an address. I'm hoping to find out more soon after the holidays. It's good they are surrounded by family. 2 kids were home from college and lost their things too, but everyone is grateful most of all to have each other.

Well, everyone is fine, and I'm sure when the shock wears off it will be more obvious how the community can help. We've got lots of things going. AmyGrace, it was the LD Johnson place...lovely home built around 1880's. One part of the family was renting it to another part of the family...big family :) so I'm not yet sure if a home will be rebuilt there or if their now looking for another rental. But I do know they will appreciate the well wishes, seeds, and recipes. Those things are portable to any place. Sadly though, I don't think the home will be rebuilt, having been a rental for so long. It was lovely though, and special in many ways to lots of people.

Michelle,
How sad about the fire, and scarry too. Keep us updated on what is happening, might be fun to do somekind of "farmgirl shower" to help make the new house a home again!

What a great idea, I'll see what I can come up with and contact you after the holidays. I have friends whose house, a cabin in the woods that they built, burned to the ground when they were not home. It is such an enormous loss, to have all your bits and pieces gone. But, no one was hurt, and that is so good.....

Michelle - what a good idea!! Count me in for seeds and a recipe at least. Maybe we could do something for them from our chapter. Where was the fire?
