One of our local farmgirls, Patti Zylawy, lost her husband this morning. Mark (who was 40 years old) was a Portland Police officer and on his way to work. He had car problems and when he got out of his car he was hit and killed by a semi-truck. Mark was a 17 year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau.

Mark and Patti have been close friends of mine and Missy's for over 10 years. When we decided to form our Farmgirl chapter Patti was so excited to be a part of it. Patti, Missy, Patricia, and I shared a vendor's booth at Farm Fair 2006. Her husband Mark came along to help set up and to make sure we were all safe and taken care of. That is the kind of man he was.

He and Patti have 4 children and he was what every father should be. Patti had often commented to us that Mark spent so much time with their kids that she would ask him when it was her turn for attention!

Their marriage was one of those where husband and wife were joined at the hip. We often said that we didn't know what would happen to Patti if she didn't have Mark. Sadly that has now come to be a reality.

Please keep Patti and her family in your prayers.

Thank you MaryJane for your kind words. We found out today that Patti may not be eligible for widow's benefits because Mark was not on duty when he was killed. A fund for the family has been set up at Key Bank. The following are two articles that came out in today's Oregonian. They say it all about what kind of man Mark was.

What a huge loss for everyone who knew and loved him. We are so saddened by this news. We remember the pain in our own community when we lost a similarly extraordinary officer last year during a sniper rampage in Moscow. I know Rebekka and Meg made a commitment to regularly remember his wife and send little gifts over time. It's hard to understand why sometimes the people who live such exemplary lives are taken from us prematurely. Kay, if there is anything we can send to Patti to let her know we are grieving for her, please let us know.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. Missy talked to Patti briefly tonight and she said that Patti was doing pretty well. Patti said that she is so comforted by the fact that she knows her husband is with the Lord. The story of Mark's death was on the news stations tonight. The police that were interviewed said so many wonderful things. And, as one officer said, it's not just accolades for someone that has passed. What they are saying is all the truth of what a wonderful officer and family man Mark was.

I am going to print off all the comments and give them to Patti when I feel the time is right. I know that she will be comforted by your words.
