Has anyone ever tried any of these? I saw some on sale at the Co-op today so I thought I would try some.

hmmm, interesting. I'm willing to give it a go! I'll be glad when Lela sleeps for the night! lol She's 7 months but a premie, so not quite sleeping through the night yet. Hopefully soon!

Heather-

I only drink after Nora has already nursed and is down for the night. To avoid any alcohol being drunk by Nora, I don't pump or nurse until after 2 hours have passed since I stop drinking. These are some guidelines that I found on the internet and in some parenting books. I have noticed that when I did drink a beer (to test the hops theory) that my production did seem to increase. Some people theorize that it helps with the let-down reflex as well as production.

I know it is very amazing. lol Beleive me, I've been studying as much as I can on this on my own body! lol haha I will try the hops next. I'm sticking with the fenugreek and waiting to see if once I get a certain amount maybe built up in me if that will help. lol And I may add hops to boot! lol

It's amazing what affects our production isn't it? I have heard that hops help too. So drinking a beer can help or a non alcoholic beer too.

Well, when I take the pills, I drink 20 oz of water with it. So I would think that would help. But, I don't know.

Plus I have tried just increasing my water to bring up my volume, and that didn't work. For 2 weeks straight, I drink 120 to 180 oz of water each day. And no increase! lol However, if I drink less then 60 oz of water (even with other liquids) then I do have a drop. However, more then 60 oz doesn't seem to bring it up any either. If I drink even one soda though I also have a dramitic decline in the amount I produce. Even if I up my water that day.

I think the tea is more efficient at increasing volume because it makes us drink more water along with the benefits of the herbs :)

I am so glad you were able to find the tablets. I hope they help you. So far I haven't had time to go look for the tablets, but perhaps this weekend or I might just buy more tea.

PS I only drink the tea once, I did find the first two pumpings after the tea there was a increase. I just keep forgetting to mak ethe tea again. I think the tea seems to work faster so far for me then the capsules.
MagnoliaWhisper Posted - Apr 27 2007 : 09:54:36 AM
I found the tablets at "The Vitamin Shop". I got 200 capsules for 7.50. So far it's been three days and I really haven't found any difference.

About the growth spurts yeah Lela seems to do the same, has a week or two where I barely keep up, then there may be a week where I have way too much (then I freeze). However, the way too much is getting less and less. It's been over a month since I produced so much I could freeze. At the beginning I could freeze every day!

Any way, starting today I'm going to increase the amount of the capsules I take and see if that will work.

Hi Heather-

I think Nora is going through a growth spurt. Every day for the last couple of days I have had to supplement with breast milk that I had frozen. So today I have started drinking more of the tea. I think it is helping but I think the tablets are the way to go too :) If I find them at my co-op I will let you know in case you can't find them where you are.

Yeah I think I will look into the tablets the tea is ok, but if you don't like fennel or licorice flavor you will hate it. It's not my "favorite" tea but it's tolerable. But, drinking that much a day is pushing it (every 3 hours!). I think like you I will start with every 6 hours, and look for the tablets.
Alee Posted - Apr 23 2007 : 3:58:36 PM
The drug is called Reserpine, but I am not sure if this is a recommended drug still for humans or not. The information on the internet was confusing.

Here is an article from Kellymom.com that has lots of information about several prescription drugs
http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/prescript_galactagogue.html

I would try drinking at least a cup of tea every 6 hours and see how that helps. If it seems to help increase then you should be fine with that- If not then I would increase your intake to every 3 hours. I also would look to see if you can find some of the Fenugreek tablets.

ok found it at Big Lots-yes I know I didn't have time to go there and get it......but funny......my mom had bought it for me while I was pg. I like tea, but am very particular about what brands and kinds. So I put it up, and never even read that it actually increased lactation, I just thought it may help with the vitamins you need to keep your energy up and things. lol Any way the sticker was still on it 1.50 at big lots.

However, she bought it in Kansas and I live in NYC, I will have to check it out here, it was over a year ago, and the way they only get things in spurts they may not even carry it on a regular basis.

BUT, I am wondering, have any of you actually used it for increasing lactation (wish I would have been on it to just keep it the same because I was producing TONS! The first few months!). Any way it says you need to drink it every 3 hours to increase, that's a lot, and the box will be gone in a hurry at that rate. Is that how much you take it? And do you think it would be as effective iced as hot. It's getting hot here already and boy I would rather drink it iced then hot if it would have the same effect.

Plus sometimes I just use 2 bags and make a huge iced jug, do you think that would have the same effect as 1 new bag every 3 hours hot?

I know you all aren't drs or nothing, but if you have personal experience maybe you can share.

I am going to try this natural route first, I have seen yogi tea before. So I will look around for it, I believe not long back Big Lots was selling it, of all places! lol

But, yes also get me the name of the rx. Hmmmm this is so nuts that horses can seem to get this rx and my dr has never heard of any. Grrr. He's way behind. (no he didn't have anything to do with my babie's care or birth, it's sounding like that may of been a good thing! He sent me to a diabetes clinic for pregnancy/birth, I'm a type 1 diabetic)
Alee Posted - Apr 22 2007 : 8:25:55 PM
Heather-

Here is a place to order the Yogi tea for nursing online:
http://www.c-els.com/sfCatalog.asp?sn=E070720050261146&pchid=69790

However our local co-op is having a sale on it at a much cheaper rate than online. Email me if you would like to work out an arrangement for me to go buy you some and then mail it to you. The sale ends May 1st though so please let me know.

Also any whole foods store that sells good supplements should have Fenugreek which really boosts production (this is in the tea as well). Try the tablets as this might really help boost your production really fast.

I know there are several meds that boost lactation. Last spring when I worked at a horse ranch we actually got a human prescription for one of the horses to boost her lactation because the drug is the same for both horses and humans! I forget the name but I can get it for you if you like.

ok, I've been bfing for 7 months with low production for 3 months! Thank you! I am going to look for this tea.......where should I look, do you think Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would have it? I NEED this.

I have spoke to my step mom who is a dr, she said there was a medication out for it. I asked my ob and he said he never heard of any med to increase production. However, he hasn't heard of a lot of meds I have asked him for, like Nystop-I'm a diabetic and prone to yeast, and nystop is a yeast stopping powder made by nystatin, I was given it in the hospital when diagnosed with diabetes, and literally had to take the bottle into him to prove to him the stuff exsist. So this is not unusual that he would not know about a medication! lol But, I haven't been able to get in contact with my step mom since (I'm number 4 of 15 kids, and my little brother just went to Iraq, she's a dr, my dad's a nurse....they're busy and we live in different states, so us coming to a meeting with communication is not often! lol Busy busy busy lives!). But, I am always pro natural versus medication if at all possible. Even though I am also pro bf then formula so was willing to take a med if that was what it would take for my daughter to keep with bfing, I've been able to keep up but barely some days, some days I have to dig into the freezer for frozen that I pumped back in my full days! Till I get caught up again! So then it starts getting scary! Especially because she is small (just reached 13 lbs and is almost 8 months old-still 7 months, but closer to 8 then 7) and I don't want to give her anything but breast milk till she is 1. So it was getting scary, but I have hopes now hearing of this tea. Please help me find it!

Hi Kate!

Nora is doing great. I just went and weighed her- she is 6lbs 11 ounces. I think she is beautiful and she sleeps about 7 hours through the night.

Thanks for the advice about the fluids- I try really hard to drink enough fluids but sometimes I know I don't quite hit the mark. Drinking the tea helps there too since I get a little jaded on just drinking plain water.

I have a website setup for her with a photo album at

Alee, it will help sustain your body, and provide essential nutrients for YOU....the amazing way our bodies work is that your Babe will get what she needs, even if you don't. Nutrients will go to milk firt and Mama last, so take extra care to eat well, and the tea and supplements can't hurt, for sure.

I drank it while nursing all 4 of my baby girls.

If you do get a clogged milk duct, or if you worry that you might need a boost in milk production, drink alot of it for a few days, and your milk will increase.

Make sure you are drinking lots of water and other healthy liquids..when I did this, I noticed alot more milk...
I *thought* I was drinking enough, until I paid attention to how much I was peeing...not enough! Remember our bodies need 2 quarts a day just to maintain...

Alee...how is baby Nora?
Who does she look like?
Does she sleep well at night?

I'm not really too worried about increasing my production, but the box did say that it would help my body to support lactation at one dosage and increase it at another. It does have Fenugreek along with lavender and other herbs in it.

Fenugreek was what I was told by our lactation specialist in NICU to take to increase milk production. It seemed to help.

I used Mother's Milk Tea with my two girls. I also draft non-alcoholic beer with lots of hops (O'Douls amber and Kaliber). While the tea seemed to increase production, I found the hops in the NA beer was more effective.

The tea is nice. It has a black licorice scent but doesn't taste like that at all, for which I am very happy since I don't like black licorice!

A million years ago when my kids were babies I always drank Mothers Milk Tea. I really liked it. When my first granddaughter was born she wasn't gaining alot of weight so my daughter drank it to build up her milk supply. Kana is the most precious little 3 year old you ever saw now, so it certainly didn't hurt her!!! Good luck and enjoy!
