Posted - Feb 07 2007 : 06:17:25 AM What kinds of herbs would be good for this for a child that is 3? I plan a trip to the health food store later today to pick something up but I don't know what to get. Thanks!
Blessings.... Sarah

Posted - Feb 13 2007 : 10:21:37 AM The cold combats the swelling around the opening of the wind pipe. Steam with a lil eucalyptus would be good for some congestion. I was just looking for something as the last cold i had i took echinacea and garlic gloves and the cold was over very quickly. I am seriously getting into these herbal/naturopathic remedies.

Posted - Feb 13 2007 : 09:21:06 AM When my granddaughter had croup, the doctor recommended cold air. Taking her outside helped more than the steam. Now if she gets it, they try the steam first, if that doesn't work, they take her outside. Now she has an upper respitory infection, poor thing. It's so hard when the little ones get sick. |

Posted - Feb 12 2007 : 08:41:18 AM I agree that humidifiers and steam from a shower are the first line of defense for croup. My middle son, now 21.5 years old, had croup from 22 months old to 6.5 years old. Several times I had to call for an ambulance because he needed oxygen on the way to the ER. One thing that helped when we got desperate, was to bundle us up and stand outside. The cool, moist, night air helped clear the throat passage out for my son. It saved us having to go to the hospital more than once. Good luck on dealing with this scary illness. Dawn in IL |

Posted - Feb 12 2007 : 06:41:30 AM Listen to Tina. Steaming is really the first line. It opens all the breathing passage-ways and the heat will kill bacteria.Put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the humidifier. Fenu-thyme from Nature's Way Products is good for congestion. Give plenty of fluids, herbal teas and homemade soup are good choices. MB

Posted - Feb 12 2007 : 06:21:46 AM It didn't turn out to be croup. Now my three yr old has a congested cough. I'm wanting to find something herbal/natural that would be like childrens cold medicine. Those are all excellent for croup too. My second child had croup at 6 mos and even at 9 still gets it from time to time.
We rarely drink much milk on a regular basis anyway. One of my kids is lactose intolerant and I don't drink it as I have allergies/asthma and psoriasis. There are so many other ways to get calicum too. To me cow milk was made for baby cows.

Posted - Feb 11 2007 : 8:02:35 PM a humidifier is a good/very good thing to have on hand for the croup. if it has developed to the seal bark sound I'd recommend running a hot shower with the door closed on the bathroom, you and the child just sit together quietly in the bathroom/not in the shower stall/but just let the bathroom really steam up and it will help. (I nearly lost a child at 9 months of age due to the croup and dr. prescribed wrong meds for him/scary e.r. visit with a child that couldn't hardly breathe) so the humidifier is what I use now for my kids when they start getting coughs or colds... I also use the saline nasal drops for babies.
Try to avoid milk products during this time for the child.
these are things we learned during that time with our baby.

Posted - Feb 07 2007 : 08:45:35 AM Here's what my "Back to Eden" book says: Take one teaspoon each of colt's foot, black cohosh, and cubeb berries; mix thouroughly and steep in 1 pint of boiling water. Take one glassful every hour according to age. Or you can make this into a syrup by mixing 1 pound of honey and boil down to make 1/2 pint. (Take a little on the point of a spoon every hour or two. Every 1/2 hour if coughing is violent)
Also: Tea made with any of the following: Tansy, wild cherry bark, hyssop, mullein, flaxseed, horehound, pepper weed, water cubeb berries, white pine, spikenard, colt's foot, blue violet, palmetto berries, thyme, golden seal, red clover blossoms, and lobelia
