Could you please share what books you feel are most helpful to someone just starting to work with natural remedies, herbs, oils, etc.

Thanks
Rae

I feel the best books for learning herbalism are: "The Book of Herbal Wisdom" by Matthew Wood, "Healing Wise" by Susun Weed, and "Wild Medicine Solution" by Guido Mase. All three books goes more into theory to get you started. Then you need a good herbal. I highly recommend The Earthwise Herbals by Matt Wood. Some good medicine making books are "Making Plant Medicines" by Richo Cech and "Herbal Recipes" by Rosemary Gladstar. Last, a field guide is a must for proper identification. "Newcomb's Wildflower Guide" covers my area but your region may be different.

How cunningly nature hides every wrinkle of her inconceivable antiquity under roses and violets and morning dew.

My all time favorite book on herbs is
The Pleasure of Herbs by Phyllis Shaudys
]

From the Back Cover:
Whether it's creating an herbal wreath for Christmas, a circular herb garden in April, a bridal bouquet in June, or a savory harvest feast, this lively book is brimming with dozens of exciting things to do with herbs every month. You'll learn to plant an indoor herb garden, make herb breads and jellies, grow and use everlastings, create pomanders and herbal pet aids, and much more.
Each chaper presents a potpourri of projects appropriate to a different month. In February, for example, you plan your spring gardens -- a perennial fragrance bed, an all-purple garden, and all-thyme garden, a knot garden. Meanwhile you luxuriate in a lavender bath and sip a hot tisane (herbal tea) -- or perhaps concoct an herbal valentine. November, on the other hand, features recipes for poultry stuffings, directions for making gift baskets, potpourris, and Thanksgiving condiments, and instructions on bedding down the garden for the winter.
An extensive "Gourmet Gardening" section begins each chapter, with advice on seed-starting, soil preparation, companion planting, organic pest control, harvesting, and garden wrap-up.
The book also includes:
* A culinary "herb-of-the-month"
* A chart of botanical names and families
* Harvesting and preserving tips
* Shaudys's previous work, Growing Fragrant Herbs for Profit, with advice on how to package, display, price, and promote herbs
* A brief encyclopedia of herbs
* A list of herb suppliers
* A bibliography
* A chart of herb uses

They can be found on Amazon used for really reasonable prices.

Happy Memories..I was looking for the publication date and look what I found inscribed in the pages......

Hi there! My whole family used herbs since, well, all their lives. To them it just came natural...or they learned from their relatives. Mama always had a book of the shelf called; Back to Eden by the Kloss family. It's still out there and their kids are updating it all the time. So I got my own copy(1972) and I have her old hardback copy(1939). Then in 1991 when I moved to the city I'm in now, there was a Vitamin Store that had just opened up and I got to be friends with the owner and we became close friends. I could talk to her about anything herbal. She had a book in her shop, opened up and sitting on a podium and of course I was drawn to it. It's now in all herb and vitamin stores. It's called; Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A. Balch, CNC. Excellent book! There's also a great companion Book that I got later called; Prescription for Natural Cures by James F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D. Both books have helped me so much. They are around $25.00 new but I've seem them at Goodwill. I guess people didn't know what to do with them after they got the new one. I gave mine to my family.
So, there you are! Happy Herbal Health! *giggle*
