Posted - Jan 07 2007 : 08:30:00 AM Get in a FULL bathtub of the hottest water you can stand. Take Ibuprofren & tylenol (ask your health person about how much, but for my size & weight I took about 800-1200mg ibup). Massage those babies and get the milk out. Pump or feed your baby as much as possible. If you don't feel better in 24 hours, have fever, or headache get your healthcare person to call in an anitbiotic for you. Rest and drink water, tea, hot fluids. Act as if you have the flu.
My personal favorite thing to do was to get into the hot, hot bathtub. Some people use a comb and comb from their lymph nodes in their armpits toward the breast and they say that helped.
I took sage (the pharmacist puts it into capsules) when I was weaning my third child. Don't really know if it made a difference in my inflamation/engorgement or not.
Hopefully you will feel better soon. It's brutal!

Posted - Jan 07 2007 : 08:20:28 AM I never really developed true mastitis just the plugged ducts....hot washclothes helped me, massage and nursing. I didn't have fenugreek tea but increasing your liquids period helps. If you can't find fenugreek tea fennel will help as well.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

Posted - Jan 07 2007 : 05:48:17 AM Thank you all for the advice. It is now day two and over all am feeling a little better but this plugged duct just won't go away. I'm going out today for some fenugreek and read that a gingerrot and potato poultice may help. Thanks again for the ideas.

Posted - Jan 06 2007 : 9:09:38 PM Try putting what ever poultice you use in a clean disposable diaper (gasp!) inside your bra. Because they are so absorbant, they keep you dry while helping to absorb what you want to get rid of. A mid wife told me this trick and I wish I had met her the first time I had it not the third, because it did help! I drank the fenugreek tea also. Feel better soon, that is just not fun even for a day.

Posted - Jan 06 2007 : 2:07:08 PM I had this several times while nursing 6 kiddos. The first thing, of course is ALOT of water. I read, too late for me, that laying fresh cabbage leaves on the area pulls out all the infection. You aren't supposed to leave them there too long, if I remember right. The other thing that helped me alot was to gently massage the area downward toward the nipple and lay a warm washcloth (as hot as you can stand) on the area every time you get done nursing. The other thing that is totally opposite what the doctor will tell you is to nurse off that side first every time you can. It hurts, but it truly helps. I'm sure lots of the ladies will have alot of herbal remedies, but that is not my speciality...just letting you know what worked for me.
