Any thoughts for help with tinnitus (ringing in the ears). The buzz is so bad at times it is distracting and causes headaches. We have been using a combination of Frankinsence and Basil essential oils, but the smell is almost intolerable and doesnt seem to help.

I have tinnitus pretty bad as well. I can't remember when it developed because I've had it so many years. It does affect my hearing. If someone is speaking in low tones or mumbling, I cannot hear them. I've found that if someone is facing me when speaking, I'm able to mostly read lips if he/she is speaking quietly.

I saw this thread from earlier in the year.

I'm curious, did any of you try the different suggestions? Did you find any relief?

I've had a ringing ear for over 12 years. When it began, it was accompanied with vertigo, nausea and vomiting. I've talked with my doctor and naturopath over all these years.

My ear rings constantly and I've actually lost some hearing in the ear. I use a fan at night in order to drown out the ringing so I can sleep. I almost can't remember what it was like to not have this sound in my head.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

We have tried the b12 and I think it was ginko. After a week on it he broke in such a bad case of hives. He was taking benadryl for 3 weeks straight. We will try the sound of the outdoors and see if that helps. The radio station and fans we have tried and didnt work. But I do know that when its bad he has a tendency to focus on it cause its so distracting and maybe if we can get him out and focusing on something else. Worth a try. Ill keep you guys posted and thanks so much for the input.

Hi Beverly,
Have you tried an elimination diet yet? It should run for 3 weeks but he may find changes occurring after 1 wk. Internal inflammatory conditions (aka Silent Inflammation) can cause all sorts of seemingly unrelated issues. The case of extreme hives suggests his system is already sensitized so it might be a simple case of dietary changes to get things soothed.

I have had ear infections my entire life. Although I haven't had one now in quite a few years I know what you are talking about! They grew less as I grew older but when I was a kid right into my 30s I had a lot of them. Miserable! I will check out the supplements you mentioned as I am one of those people who sometimes eats well and then for periods of time I don't. I feel that most of the time I could use a good vitamin or two.

Beverly
Some people have tinnitus a lot worse than I do. I read somewhere that if you can hear running water in the sink or whatever you are fairly fortunate. But I think that you are right as far as your husband really focuses in on the noise sometimes.I know I do and those are the times it is hardest so now I work to 'ignore' it by doing something else. I have to find something that really occupies my mind. And that lends a lot of credence to the idea of focusing on a different sound!

I actually don't buy in the store. I prefer a health food place and I buy most of my supplements online from Vitacost. The brands I use are NSI (Nutraceutical Sciences Institute) or Now products which Richard's Food Market sells. For the B12 I use, mine is in a liquid form from Now.
I am actually not a big fan of supplements except when necessary. I believe that we are able to get all the nutrients from the food we eat. But on the occasions when I do take a supplement these two brands are what I use.
For the hearing loss, you might want to increase your intake of pineapple. Also include plenty of garlic, kelp and sea vegetables in your diet. I usually get ear infections, ever since my trip to Japan 30 years ago, which they say is probably where I developed the problems. I have noticed that since I have added a fruit smoothie to my diet I don't get as many as I use to. Just a thought.

First thing that was suggest was listening strategies. The University of Iowa claims this will break the pattern. So I would try to sit quietly outside where you can hear nature. Pick either a bird singing, a cricket, or even a squirrel at play. Focus on that sound only. Try to tune out all other sounds. This will increase your listening and maybe help. They say that Tinnitus is a condition that originates in the brain not the ear. Some other suggestions I have is to begin taking a B12 and folic acid. Your levels may be low and this might help. I hope this helps.

Becky that makes a lot of sense to me. Because when I am truly occupied doing other things the Tinnitus seems to ' go away'. I am definitely going to try that. I do have some hearing loss as it is so if I can find a way to alleviate the white noise it would be wonderful.

What do you suggest for a vitamin brand that is good? There are so many out there it has been easier to just buy Centrum or something like that.

Marianne I have tried to train mine to sound like music. My ears play a lot of Bach haha. Great organ music :)

It does help though to have some other white noise running in the background. I am fortunate that mine is a hissing noise not a whistle. That would drive me nuttier than I am already.

If you turn the radio on and tune it between stations until you find the right tone that makes the ringing "disappear," it can help especially at nighttime.

Beverly it does sound messy. I would love the scent myself but probably not all the time. My Tinnitus is worse some times of the year than it is others. Right now it seems to be more aggravating. I have had my ears irrigated before and sometimes that helps because earwax can cause a lot of feedback if there is too much of it. If you google it there are all kinds of sites out there that have 'cures' but I like what hearing I have left. So unless someone comes out and says this worked for me I guess I will leave them be.

Did the Frankincense and Basil help at all?

Beverly, have you tried this protocol yet? I found it on Camp Wander.

2 drops helichrysum essential oil on 1/2 cotton ball. Insert in ear and leave overnight.

Equal parts of Frankinsence and Basil Essential Oil in a bottle with a roller ball. Then roll this mixture on starting at top of ear to front of ear and then from top of ear behind the ear to the hollow just below the ear lobe. Never put essential oils in the ear. My boyfriend has suffered with this for 7 years and cant find any relief. We have tried everything we can think of and have heard of. Going to check into the next protocol with essential oils to see if that works and is less smelly. I like the smell. It smells like licorice. He cant stand it.

If you find a miracle cure please let me in on it. I have had Tinnitus for a long time. I do know that certain things will make it worse in my case. Stress is probably the biggest factor but I find that sugar (and probably a lot of additives) also make it worse.

I do run a fan a night sometimes as it makes the same noise but it is NOT in my head. And I am trying to quit smoking which is a big no_no in more than one way.

I do not know much about using essential oils to alleviate it what exactly do you do with yours? Does it help at all?
