My dog (boxer-bulldog-beagle mix) has parasites. I was told that I could help him overcome the issue by crushing up wormwood, a walnut shell, and some cloves. Unfortunately, I have only barely begun my herbal/spices collection, and do not have any of these items on hand. I've found some at a health-foods store nearby, but they were SO expensive, and at the time, I wasn't aware I could use them.

I have basil leaves, garlic powder, ground cinnamon, and that's about it as far as herbs / spices go.

Any ideas or suggestions, ladies? We're keeping him hydrated. I have given him a de-wormer (one dosage) only to discover it was meant for roundworms. He's keeping himself hydrated. I just want his tummy to feel better... :(

Pretty sure you need the black walnut hulls and such for worms/parasites, but yes, you definitely need correct dosing. I'm sure there's pre-made stuff out there, isn't there? Like an 8oz bottle on Amazon or something. I have human stuff I'm currently using (started at the full moon), but it's possible it might be able to be used for pets (I don't have pets, so I don't know particulars).

You might find Juliette de Biaracli Levy's (I probably spelled her name wrong) book about Herbs for Dogs and Cats quite useful--I use her remedies for mine. There is some debate now about giving garlic to dogs, as it has been said to give them some GI problems. I have used it previously with my home made wormer and did not notice any problems at that time. And Lilliane is right, you need to make sure that you use black walnut for parasites/worms, etc. You can order bulk herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs, they are fabulous and that is where I get my bulk herbs from (what I don't grow myself). There is also a Natural Rearing site that you can order Juliette's remedies from if you would prefer to do that.

Hi Lala,
If you are not familiar with how to dose your boy accordingly, do not give him wormwood or black walnut hull (Juglans nigra is the correct type for parasites). Personally, I would not use cloves internally on my dogs, it is too easy to cause more problems.
To correct worms, you need to remove the favourable environment in his digestive system. Take out any grain-based foods if you are giving him processed food, and don't give him anything that has regular dairy or sugar in it. Once his system is balanced, he can have organic goat milk if that's part of his feeding.
Any herbal choices you make are going to take time: you can add garlic to his food (powder or fresh) immediately and I would strongly suggest talking to a holistic vet.
Cheers,
