I am looking for a natural soap recipe, or mix of oils to make a fly spray that we can put on ourselves. The flies are horrible and I can't enjoy sitting on the porch at all. It's horrible. They bite constantly.

I make te bug off bars from Mary Janes Outpost book. They work great as a bug repellent & skin moisturizer

I found it! A recipe from The Herb Companion! Woo hoo!

Now I just need the ingredients, and can't wait to try it.

Hi, and sorry about your black fly problem. They are mean! My cousin told me they are very bad at Kelley Island in Ohio and they use vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle. She said you have to spray it on often but it works...I'd give it a try!

I will be watching this post! I guess I must be allergic to them? My bites from the black fly get HUGE and the itch is unbearable. The bite area gets hard as a rock. After a few days it will start to ooze fluid. It's a two week ordeal with each and every bite. I've gone online searching for relief have come up empty handed. We have a running creek and a pond on our property, both of which those pesky flies love. I hope someone in the Sisterhood has a remedy!

Well . . .
I guess this means I'm a farmgirl on a mission - to find a natural remedy. They are still bothersome and we can't even work in the garden now without blood being drawn from us. The bites hurt too.
