I noticed in this forum that there's a tip for clearing out mice with peppermint oil, which I passed along to a friend who has had an unwelcome cohabitant lately, but I also wanted to share my favorite use for peppermint oil: mosquito salve.

Whenever I am outside around dusk, I get hundreds of mosquito bites, but the I find the thought of all the strange chemicals in bug spray repellent, so I am pretty powerless to dissuade them. When I was little, my dad told me to put toothpaste on the bites to cool them down, and probably to stop me from scratching. It worked, but was pretty messy, so now I just dab on pure peppermint oil. The tingly coolness erases the itchy feeling almost instantly. Just a warning for people with sensitive skin: it can feel warm and even painful for some, I hear. My only problem was when I put some on my temples to perk myself up one morning, but was a bit incautious and got too close for comfort to my eyes. That sure stung, but I've never had any trouble since.

Any other uses for peppermint out there? It's definitely one of my favorite herbs. :)

Oh, that's brilliant! I never thought of putting it on beforehand. :)

I use peppermint oil for insect repellant. At our farmgirl campout last week I applied peppermint oil before the evening hayride. I think I also cleared everyone's sinus too. But I never even heard a mosquito.
