Does anyone know how to make peppermint oil, I place it around the barn and house and it keeps the barn mice so far from coming in, at least have not found traces of them. I have been buying oil from the health food stores, but would like to know how to do my own.

I have spearmint planted out side the kitchen door, but the mint is stronger, I have planted regular mint with it. I was told that you could crush the mint and put it in cloth bags. I have been buying mouse magic packets in the garden center and oil in the health food store and just add a couple of drops to that every time. This seems to work great.

If you are using it around a building it would be cheaper to just plant mint around the outside. Works the same. For inside the house sticks of Doublemint gum scattered in the cupboards work just as well. Everyone I tell this to thinks I am insane until they try it.

As I understand it, mice and other pests find their way around by scent. They remember their way back to their nests by the scent; they don't like to go where unfamiliar scents are because they might be the scents of predators. Peppermint oil is such an overwhelming fragrance the little mice's noses get confused and can't find their way back to where they were living. They move on to somewhere else. Same for insects. I've had great success keeping ants away from our dog food storage by just "painting" the cracks in the pantry with mint oil.
I am not sure if a person can "make" mint oil in a small quantity. A friend of mine is a mint farmer, and he uses a steam distillation process that is quite involved. It takes an acre of mint to make 35 pounds of oil.
For more info or to ask the "master" himself, visit www.peppermintjim.com. He's a friend of mine, and if you have a question about mint, he's sure to know the answer!

I use it in the kitchen, we live next to a large undeveloped area and have a tendency to get mice. Ever since I started using the peppermint oil, I haven't had any more problems.
