Have any of you ever created a living herb wreath? I am considering one this summer to have hanging on my front porch. It would be so handy for snipping off what I need while barbecuing and making salads etc.

Hi Karen, you can even plant your favorite flowers like impatiences or marigolds . . they make a very showy wreath! I loved Rene's suggestion of making them for gifts. I think I will do one up for my BF's Mom, she will love it!

This is such a neat idea, I hope I can do one of these. I must find a wreath frame first. Oh good reason to hit the thrift store!!! Blessings,Karen

Hi Rene',

did not think of the wreath frame, that is a great idea. . . a good way to recycle my christmas wreath frames! The peat moss is another great idea, it would help hold the water a little longer and keep the overall wreath lighter in weight.

Thank you for sharing!! Love learning new things now. . . where did I put that christmas wreath frame. . .hehehe!

Joanna,
I have done one every year for the last seveal years. I have also done them in the past for gifts for summer weddings... I love them. I take the wire wreath frames and add chicken wire to one side of it, then add peat moss (the dried stuff in a bag from crafters warehouse) then take the plants out of the carton and plant them in the peat. I try to pack them in there really tightly. The last couple of times I have taken floral wire and woven it around the plants and around the frame (in front) for additional suport. then lay it flat on it's back and water it down really well... I let it sit there and drain for a while, after a good initial soaking, I just use a spray bottle to water.. anyway....that is what I do :)

Well, they are simple to make. You can use your leftover chicken wire to make the wreath form, wrap it up with black plastic ( either the kind you purchase at the garden center or use strips from your trash bags) Leave an opening to fill the form with pre-moistened potting soil
then finish wrapping.

Now take your scissors and cut a small x in the plastic and plant your seedlings. Spread them out but not to far apart. Now lay in down in a sunny location for a week or two for the seedlings to set their roots.
Once set, hang it up. They will continue to grow and spread out until the wreath is very full looking. To water, lay it on the ground and give it a good shower as needed with the garden hose.

They are beautiful. You could do your wreath in just one herb or create a variegated wreath with several herbs. ( I rotate mine a quarter turn every few days to keep the herbs spreading out and filling in.) They look wonderful as a center piece on your picnic table with a large bowl of salad snuggled in the center.

Tons of uses, very expensive to purchase, great gifts and yet another herb garden for us to tend!
