Posted - Jan 23 2010 : 3:37:07 PM As the International Herb Association gets ready to release its newest Herb of the Year publication -Dill 2010, (and to which I am a contributor), I wonder if any of you want to discuss Dill and its uses. I have blogged with a few things that I did not use in my article here...
http://edgehillherbfarmer.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!B892B2F03E01EEC8!1463.entry
But what I want to know is- Do you love and use Dill? If so, do you use it mostly fresh, dried, or the seed? Do you grow dill? What do you make with it?...Pickles, of course, count.
Looking forward to hearing what you say! Love, Karen

Posted - Jul 09 2010 : 09:25:34 AM I know that I am late to this party, but wanted to add that I am also a real fan of dill! We love it with the cucumber (and onion) salad and mashed potatoes already mentioned. I also like to make a dill butter to melt over grilled salmon. Glad to know this is Dill's year!

Posted - Feb 06 2010 : 1:10:37 PM Dill is one of my favorite herbs & I grow more than I can usually use, but the swallow tail butterfly needs it for it's larva. I make dill bread which is very tasty but my favorite is oven roasted potatoes with dill weed instead of parsley. You need to go light on the dill weed or it might be too strong for your taste. I also make dill butter which is great on different styles of potatoes & of course hot rolls from the oven. Hugs Di PS Dill potatoe is pretty darn good too.

Posted - Feb 05 2010 : 09:42:26 AM Delicia, I asked my husband because I didn't remember the two kinds and he didn't remember either. I'll look and see if I put the tags in the ground in the herb garden. We try to keep our things labeled in case we forget. I do remember one stayed like baby dill and the other crowned and smelled wonderful!

Posted - Feb 05 2010 : 06:55:44 AM I love dill! It's so pretty first thing in the morning covered with dew drops. I grow it for market and sell bunches- a surpricing number of people buy them just to scent their kitchens! Don't forget to plant a row for the swallowtail butterfly larvae- they love it too. -Cindy

Posted - Feb 05 2010 : 06:54:29 AM I read this title and thought, "bummer. I hate Dill"...I know it is exceptional for pickling, and for some reason it doesn't bother me there, but it is one of those herbs you either like or you don't :) I don't like it fresh, typically.

Posted - Feb 05 2010 : 06:49:01 AM I plant dill just so I can catch a whiff of it's scent as a gentle breeze blows off the bay. Gee, I can almost smell it now! It brings back memories of gramma's bread and butter pickles that she used to put up every year....

Posted - Feb 05 2010 : 03:43:03 AM I love dill, but have absolutely no luck growing it in Northeast PA. It turns yellow and then dries up. Any suggestions? Or maybe our climate here is just not right for dill?
Thanks! Luanne beekeepersgirl #691

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 3:50:47 PM I also love dill but, have only tried one type. What was the 2 types that you grew last year Lainey? The dill mashed potatoes sounds really good right now I am starving... |

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 1:46:20 PM We love dill and grow our own. We grew two varieties last year. We use it in a lot of different foods and especially love dill mashed potatoes. My hubby likes to cook crawfish in dill and salt water. He eats them in August every year.

Posted - Jan 24 2010 : 11:46:45 AM i love dill, but i think it's due to my Eastern European roots. i use it in cucumber salad, potato salad,on seafood, pickles, and my favorite on steamed carrots with butter, yum! i don't plant it anymore, because i just leave a couple heads go to seed in my garden and every year i have lots of dill.

Posted - Jan 23 2010 : 9:38:27 PM I always plant more dill then I can use because I LOVE the smell and taste of fresh dill. I'll walk in the garden and pick some to nibble and smell. I too love it in salads. I sprinkle dried dill in lots of things that "need" something. I'm excited to check out your blog about dill.

Posted - Jan 23 2010 : 4:01:55 PM I've never been a huge fan of dill (besides it's application in dill pickles). Maybe it's because it is typically paired with seafood and I think the flavor totally overpowers a lot of light flavored fish. But I just recently started buying an organic herb salad mix at the grocery store and it has quite a bit of dill in it and I LOVE it. I never woulda thought to put a salad together that's all herbs, but it is amazing! It's full of dill, cilantro and some other herbs. Maybe I will plant some dill this year along with my other herbs just to make my own herb salad mixes :)
