How do I dry Sage? Hubby has it in his garden and the leaves are getting nice and big. Do I just pick them, wash them, and set them to dry?

Is it okay to dry the ones that have bug bites in them as long as I wash them and cut those parts off??

I know Sage is for cooking, but other than that, I am not sure why Hubby got a sage plant. :)

The indians used sage for something didnt they? To keep evil spirts away or something like that. I think. Im sure they used it for cooking purposes too. Blessings,Karen

i just cut most of the plant down, rinse and hang upside down to dry, after it has dried, i put the leaves into large ziplock bags and store.

Sharon, Thank You, I am very excited to try your recipe. I do grow basil, rosemary, sage and lavender. Will have to scout out the rest of the ingredients for your recipe, but I know it must be good.

I hang all sorts of herbs to dry in my living room..I have an antique loom that has the perfect place across the front to hang a string of bundles of herbs for drying. since I am not weaving with it (yet) I try to use it. I dried lovage, mint and thyme this week, and have more lovage, rosemary and mint drying now. Sage is going to be drying soon. My plants arn't quite big enough yet. My old plants didn't make it over winter for some reason..but the new ones look good.

I use it in stuffing and have also rubbed it on Turkey and Chicken before roasting :) Ooooh it does smell so good!

Thanks so much for sharing your recipe. I can't wait to try it. I get excited just thinking about grinding the herbs and smelling their aroma. Tasting it will be even more fun :) When you say poultry seasoning is it a rub or do you season stuffing with it? Sorry, I just need a little help with how to use it.

I tapped in some nails all along the top of the window casing. I just hand my twine from those!

A couple of things to keep in mind for your sage.
First harvest just after the morning dew has evaporated and before the sun it real hot. . . this is when the essential oils are their strongest on the leaves ( for any herb)
rinse in cool water, not running water. You do not want to wash away the essential oils and cleaning under running water can bruise the young tender leaves
Air dry as has been suggested or you can use a dehydrator.
I like to keep mine whole until ready to use, wow what a wonderful aroma when you chop or crumble them up! { Sometimes I use a whole leaf in a stew, rather than breaking it up}

The best part about herbs is all the fun you get to have!!!!

Here's the recipe Kristin :) Hope you like it :)

Poultry Seasoning (like Bell’s)

•1 tablespoon rosemary
•1 tablespoon oregano
•1 teaspoon sage
•1 tablespoon ginger
•1 tablespoon marjoram
•1 tablespoon thyme
•1 teaspoon pepper

Mix ingredients and store in an airtight container.

*I have a coffee grinder that I use for spices, I actually put the spices in that and mixed thoroughly until it was a powder like Bell's. You could use a blender too!

Thanks for posting this. I have an over abundance of sage this year I think due to our wet spring. Now I know how to dry it I will try to start drying some right away. I would love the recipe for poultry seasoning if you don't mind sharing it.

Jessie,

I just trim the plant,wash, pat dry with paper towels and tie into bundles to let air dry. Don't laugh at what I do next :) I take a piece of twine and attach it in front of my kitchen window from one side to the other (a window that does not get much sun) and then I take paper clips bend them to form a letter 's', loop through the tie on the bundle and then hang them up on the twine.

I do this with alot of my herbs, it looks so pretty and it make the house smell so nice :)

When dried, remove the leaves from the stem and rub or crumble the sage leaves. Store in an airtight container in a dark place. I have a recipe for a wonderful poultry Seasoning (like Bell's) if you would like :) Hope this helps!

I know that it is recommended that you use leaves that have not been damaged by bugs. I don't see why you couldn't if they were properly cleaned. Maybe someone else knows :)

Jess, if you just set them on a paper towel or something that should work. I think sage keeps some kind of insect critters away too? Anyone know?
