I've been reading about companion planting and the author of one of the books highly recommends tansy as a companion plant to attract beneficial insects.

I grew it once about 15 years ago and as I remember, it was somewhat invasive, and I was constantly pulling it out of the lawn. (I moved, so it is no longer a problem for me!) But I thought I'd take her advice anyway and maybe plant a little in the corners of my garden.

Does anyone have a few starts they could send me?

Hi, I am new, just introduced myself in the wecome wagon. I am very interested in herbal remedies. I grow a number of them. I grow tansy-and I grow it by my outdoor avairies (I breed excotic birds) it repels insects. Wanted to let you know-you can find tansy growing in most fields/pastures. Just locate and transplant, and it will florish.

Tansy bags are used to repel ants too. Just stick them in their pathways and back out they'll go!

WEll then I am sure glad the tansy I have growing stays in one area (so far....more than 5 years) and isn't where Mona or the sheep can reach it. The chickens ignore it. Even with their teeny little brains, they must know it isn't okay...or they would just rather eat the succulent pansies or garden seedlings..haha.

It's funny to see tansy in a positive light! Here, tansy is a noxious weed, and you can get big fines for having it on your property. We once owned a 20 acre plot of land that we didn't live on and got a notice from the county to get the tansy off it or face fines or "possible jail time". It can kill cattle. Here's an blurb about it's negative side from the county noxious weed board:

"Tansy ragwort can kill horses and cattle. Goats are sometimes affected by it, but seldom sheep. The plants contain several different alkaloids that are concentrated mostly in the flowers, followed by leaves, roots, and stems. The plant itself isn't toxic until it is digested by the animal's system. Alkaloids in all parts of the plant, when eaten by livestock, are broken down by the animal's liver enzymes into toxic compounds which may kill the animal, especially if repeatedly consumed. If you raise horses or cattle, you must know this weed."

So, be careful if you have livestock!

I have tansy too. I have been using it on the kids (rubbing leaves on them) to repel mosquitos...seems to work great...although they look a little green! My youngest daughter wove some in her braids this morning while we were watering the garden. I have tansy growing right up next to the hen house...so it does not get "burned" easily by heavy, um...fertilizer. And it is the first thing up each spring here!
