Does anyone know a good herbal remedy to relieve congestion? I've had congestion in an ear for some time now. I've tried some things, but not much luck. Also something that might help the family relieve congestion from a cole, other than sitting over a pot of hot water (hard to get a 5 year old to do!) Thanks! |

A really good relief for chest congestion is using
camphorated oil EXTERNALLY. I learned this from my grandmother who probably learned it from hers. I used it on my children when they were growing up. You take camphorated oil and rub it on their chest and the soles of their feet. Only problem you can't buy it from the drug store anymore, but should still be able to get it from where they sell animal supplies or vet supplies. The pharmacist told me they had to quit carrying it because it is only for external use and I guess others tried to ingest it which you can't do. Also avoid any flames because it is like any oil and can be flammable.

For chest congestion I make a strong tea of Thyme leaves. It has worked for my kids and I.

a really good congestion reliever is GINGER, if you boil a ginger root for about 15 to 20 min then leave it on a very low flame for about 1/2 hour. I strain it into a cup & add honey, my favorite is wildflower honey or clover honey. Do this 3 to 4 x's a day. it really does work. Michele

I do the same things that LoriJ suggests. I even use the EO in a nice steamy bath or shower and add them to a vaporizer. |

Hi Judi,
I have asthma and as a kid I would go into panic attacks when I had a cold with congestion because then I really truly could not breathe. My grandmother told my mom to put fresh rosemary in my pillowcase. It seems to work.
I also find that eating Thai or Indian Food works wonders. Did you know that the Thai Sauce made from peppers and vinegar is a natural form of Robitussin (with a nicer flavor!). A bonus, unlike the man made mucous thinning drugs, Thai Sauce will not make the kid bonkers.

Neti pots work wonders. (If you do a search there are several threads about them) Also, a friend of mine swears by "Ear Candles". You can get them at health food stores. If your 5 year old can handle a tiny bit of heat, I suggest hot water with lemon, honey & a teeny tiny bit of cayenne pepper (you should hardly be able to know its there). These are things I use to keep colds & flus & sinus infections away during the winter, and they seem to help alot!
