Has anyone experimented making herbal inks like from pokeberries - and how about making a quill pen from a turkey feather? Sounds like fun. When I was a kid I used to put poke juice on my cheeks for blush.

Maggie - What an amazing article - I would never have thought of it - that is the brains that gets you a column and more jobs girl - I am never out of rusty things here - bet it would look cool on a white man's shirt or even a faded blue jean shirt - how about a rusty horseshoe for a design???? Interesting :)

my boyfriend made ink, years ago, using lampblack...not herbal, but if you're interested I can ask him the specifics of how he did it!

I read where you can add gum arabic to thicken the ink. I can probably find more turkey feathers from wild turkeys, or I can try a craft store to mess around making a quill. I love quill pens - I would love to have a nice writing set and I know there is a catalog that sells pretty color scented inks, and I guess you could still make your own inks and scent them with essential oils...... sounds like I will research this more.

That does sound cool. When I was little, I would make walnut "juice" and try to write with it. I just gathered up a bunch of black walnuts, put them in a bucket with some water, and beat the heck out of them. Then my friend and I would write notes with it, or just dip things in it to see what color they came out. We did similar stuff with pokeberries and any other stuff we could find in the woods. We loved making "stew", just walking around with a bucket and picking up whatever berries and leaves and mud we could find. I bet my mom loved doing my laundry as a kid!
