I just harvested my lavender and I was just wondering if there was a recipe for making an essential oil from some of it? Beverley

i personally purchase it 15 lbs. at a time from a canadian company called FPI. And we do sell it in small amounts on my website (http://prairielandherbs.com/rawmaterials.htm). You can buy it from many places, though, depending on the quantity you need. Essential oil university and rainbow meadow are two of my favorite suppliers in the states - for smaller amounts.

for pictures of homemade still, just start googling! Try googling "homemade still" or "make your own still" and you'll find some interesting info. Mine is purchased, not homemade.

Can you'll share where you buy your bulgarian essential oil? And where can I see pictures of the homemade distiller. I'd love to try growing lavender!

Yep, you pretty much need a still to do hydrosol as well. it's produced at the same time as the essential oil - the oil can be seen floating on top of the hydrosol, in most cases, and is siphoned off.

I love Bulgarian lavender essential oil too. It's my favorite. I've seen pictures of Maggie's distiller on the website - it's gorgeous.

So do you have to have a distiller to make your hydrosol? if not how do you do that. linen spray would be nice to have too. beverley

If you're a bit "handy", you sure can make your own distiller! i've seen info on it online, but never done it myself. If you're still interested, Beverley, I can see if I've got the info archived somewhere.....but, truthfully, you'll probably get more hydrosol (lavender water) than essential oil. I buy mylavender essential oil from Bulgaria, but, I sure do adore the hydrosol i distill from fresh lavender!! :) I use it on my sheets ever night. :)

Beverley - Maggie from Prairieland Herbs is an expert at this. But you do have to have your own distiller to do it. You could try infusing some oil with your lavender though. You would still get a lovely scent.

You have to have a distiller to do it. I guess if you had a distiller laying around it mightbe worth it to look into.

The process for making essential oils is VERY difficult and not typically something you can do at home. The amount of lavender you need for just a tiny bit of oil is INSANE. you would need to serch the Internet but it isn't something people typically do.
