I'm newly pregnant and was wondering about herbs that will help with morning sickness? I'm not puking, I just have an upset stomach most of the day.

Ooh! Congrats! Let me know if you need any knit baby stuff. I'm not in the "market" for a few years, yet, so I love knitting for others who are expecting!

Be VERY careful of the crackers! My mama said she gained close to 20 lbs. from eating crackers to stave of nausea. Try bananas. Apparently bananas help ease an upset stomach by stimulating the production of mucus from the stomach lining. Sounds gross, but apparently good for you.

Talk to your doctor about what kinds of herbs you can take (some cause contractions! Be very careful!) But once you know which ones you can't have, try some herbal teas that are a single-ingredient, like chamomile or peppermint. Peppermint is GREAT for all that ails you, whether nausea, indigestion, or hot flashes.

Also, I found something called Preggie Drops/Queasy Pops, and got them for my friend during her first Tri. Not only did they help, but she absolutely loved the flavors! Be sure to hide them from hubby, though! He might develop a taste for them, too!

Hope that helps!

there are some good morning sickness remedies at Mothering.com. I have been reading this magazine for nearly 30 years and still enjoy it. Now as a grandmothering person !

"Getting it out of your system" sounds horrible! I can't believe you were able to get up at 5:00 either. (I guess you do get by with what you can though!) I have to be to work by 8 and I roll out of bed around 7. I just saw a nurse practitioner last week who said she was miserably ill all nine months with her kids. She swears by B6 and Unisom. I tried it last time I was pregnant though and my aids had to cover for me while I slept on the floor in my office. She also told me to eat protein all day. She suggested nuts, beans, almond butter, yogurt, milk, stuff like that. other than feeling like a cow for eating so much, my stomach doesn't hurt as bad.

I like the cinnamon idea too though. It sounds like it would be sweet enough, but not to sweet as to make me more sick!

I had morning sickness for 14-16 weeks with each of my girls. I keep a baggie of Cheerios on my desk at work, and they were much more palatable than crackers. I also made sure that I did'nt get too hungry at any point, because then the nausea would be much worse. Quite by accident, I found that foods with cinnamon, (cinnamon raisin toast, morning rice, oatmeal, cinnamon rolls) seemed to have a calming effect on my stomach, and took the edge off the nausea.

I also woke up at 5:00 am so that I could "get it out of my system" before I had to get in the car or on the train to go to work. Adaptive behavior, yes, but as farmgirls know, anything to get by and keep going.

Hadn't heard about the B6 before, but if I get pregnant again, I will certainly give it a try.

The morning sickness is still a pain! I hate it! Hopefully it will be over soon! Congrats to you and your daughter Patty! I'm jealous she isn't having morning sickness this time. I've heard of women that are really sick during their first pregnancy, and aren't their second. I was hopping that I wouldn't be sick. I was half joking about adopting next time because I hate it so much. I love kids though so I'm sure I'll get over it! :)

How exciting Mindy ! My daughter is due Dec 12 the with her second child. She heard the heart beat last week. She suffered horribly with morning sickness with her first baby, but this time she isn't having any.
Blessings to you and your family

Dawn,
It went really well. When I went in earlier it was just to soon to tell. Yesterday we saw the embryo and a heart beating. They said I'm due Dec. 5th. It was such a huge stress relief! It was depressing to know there was a chance of a miscarriage. I know there is always a possibility, it's just nice not expecting it.

Thanks ladies! I'll have to try some of those suggestions! What is a wild yam and in what form would I get it? I'm 29 and will be 30 in a few months, so I'm interested in it's benefits.

I just went and got an ultra sound yesterday to see how far along I am. The doctor told me that my yoke-sack shows that I'm 7 weeks, but she said she couldn't see a embryo, so there is a chance of miscarriage. I have to go back on the 30th of this month to see if anything has changed. My husband and I keep hoping she just couldn't see it. Our first was really little through the whole pregnancy and still today, so we're hoping the embryo was just hiding. :)

We'll see, it was a surprise to find out I was pregnant, but a good one. In the mean time, I still feel sick though, so I'm hoping that is a good sign too! We'll see.

I tried whole food vitamins, they made me so ill, I should have gone to the Dr. I wanted to take pills by Vitanica. I have had the best of luck with their products. I think there was some order issue at my supplement place. I really feel that it is best to get vitamins from your food anyway, so I ate one-a-days and lots of veggies. I got a lot of happiness from the pregnancy tea. Since I had to give up so much sstuff when I was prego, I felt it was special tea, just for me. When things got really bad, I used the pressure point wristband, and they gave me temporary relief.I swore by about my 10th week of being ill that if another person told me gingerale and crackers, I would puke on their shoes.

Hi Mindy - my family likes the peppermint tea ice cubes. One of my daughters had really bad ALL day sickness for awhile. She could not even keep soda or tea down. Then I came up with the idea of making peppermint tea ( with a hint of ginger) and then freezing it in ice cubes. She could suck on a cube and that would settle her stomach down enough to try crackers or soda. We use to carry a cooler with them in it! CONGRATS and hope some of our suggestions help!

Just another word of caution here, in my consultation practice, I always find out if there are fibroid tumors present or in the family history, (breast and or uterine) before suggesting the use of wild yam. Fibroids can be fed by either progesterone or estrogen. Wild yam may not be suitable for all women. The blessing of menopause is that estrogen is in lower amounts and will often be the reason a fibroid tumor is shrinking. High levels of progesterone have also been know to be a cause of fibroid tumors.

MindyS, congrats on your pregnancy and I'm sorry you've had a problem with morning sickness. The women in our family that suffered from it ate a few crackers and said it seemed to help.

Tasha, congratulations on your good news!! I'm happy to hear it. I remember on a post from a few months ago there were a few of us trying to conceive. I'm still trying and hoping.

Yes yes to patty. candied ginger is only really tolerable in a pea sized amount and with good reason ;) thanks for mentioning that ;) Ginger is used medicinally to promote delayed menstruation and no more than about 2 grams should be taken in a 24 hour period.so that's about 1/2 of a piece of candied ginger. Ginger ale is not concentrated so it's safer to drink a little more, maybe 6-10 ounces of it in little sips as you feel better. It should be known though that though it *MAY* induce miscarriage, there has never been a documented case of miscarriage from use of ginger.

ETA: I forgot to mention wild yam. it has helped me out great sums! women nearing 30 and beyond should really be using yam anyhow because of it's benefits to our reproductive systems ESPECIALLY during pregnancy and more so in menopause. Just FYI ;)

ginger should be used with care, in any form, can bring on contractions. Use only a small amount

Mindy, I'm 8 weeks in and just getting over morning sickness, I also happen to be a doula and studying midwife. RRL doesn't really do much for morning sickness anyhow and really should be avoided until the third trimester. Blue Sky makes a great ginger ale. also it's cliche but it's effective-dill pickles. The vinegar helps make your stomach acid neutral. Protien in small amounts like that in yogurt or cottage cheese if you tolerate dairy (and textures...textures are a big thing for me...) and even little cubes of a hard medium to sharp cheddar. Maybe an egg cooked how you enjoy it, too. Also, try to find some candied ginger slices or even ginger candy (2 different things)-you'll probably be able to find them at a natural foods store or co-op. Traditional medicinals makes a pregnancy tea called 'Pregnancy Tea' and it has a lot of beneficial herbals in it for your entire pregnancy. It does have RRL in it, but in such a small amount that it's not like drinking just a cup of RRL tea.

AAAALSO...try to take your vitamins as you can but if you can't tolerate them go to a natural children's vitamin supplement. A lot of drug store and big box store prenatals get peed out of your system so I'd try to find some whole food vitamin as well as fish oil to take as your prenatal. A natural food store person can help you choose the most effective supplement-but given good nutrition (I HIGHLY recommend the Brewer Diet for pregnancy) you really shouldn't need anything supplemental aside from folic acid and fish oil. There is even a vegetarian version of the Brewer Diet if you don't eat meat.

One mroe thing and I think Alee mentioned this: stay active as much as you can. keeping yourself fit helps until your blood thickens up enough to catch up to the increase in hormones.

HTH!!

How far along are you? Homebirthing?

I got some really fancy packaged prenatals in my, "welcome to pregnancy," kit from the doc. They had a multiple vitamin and an omega3. They were $50 a month, so I took the package with me to costco and found that one-a-day women's and an omega3 were the same as the fancy ones. The fish oil was making me have horrid burps, so I had to go flax. The key is taking it at night because it is the B6 that will fight the quease off in the morning.

Hi Mindy,
Mint tea. Mint is soothing to the tummy. Use honey if you can instead of sugar to sweeten it, but if you can't do honey, just keep the sugar on the 'low' side. Not too much.
You can do the mint tea cold or hot. :) Good luck.
