Does anyone have any experience with using Feverfew for Migraine headaches? i am so tired of taking prescription meds for these headaches and am curious about Feverfew. I am careful of my diet triggers and other causes but they still ruin many days each month.
Thanks, Kathy

I have had migraines for the last two months. I used to get them infrequently but when I got diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus it seemed to stir things up for me.
Saw Neuro and MRI was okay except I had a bad sinus infection when I had the Epstein-Barr - I was taking Fiorcet but neuro said that can actually cause headaches. She will be calling me in something else, not sure what. I am taking Flexeril to take some of the muscle tension from my neck and shoulders. My headaches are a combination of tension and vascular.
I started taking Feverfew tincture a few weeks ago, but from what I understand it takes awhile for it to work. What all dosage of feverfew are you taking. I want to grow some here, how easy is it to grow?
The headaches are no fun and I don't like them as they get behind my eyes and I can't stand light so I walk around with my Marilyn Monroe sunglasses on. I also get very sensitive to smells with my headaches.
This is an interesting thread. If anyone uses anything else herbal, I would be interested in hearing about it.
Remember, I have the fibromyalgia too, so I wonder it that is something else that contributes to it. I also had a hysterectomy in my early 30's and am nearing 50 and am on different hormones - 1/2 strength Estratest and vagifem and estrace cream - don't take the other two all of the time.

The thing that helped my migraines most was a hysterestomy. About the only time I get them anymore is weather changes. I tried feverfew with limited success; accupuncture worked better. I agree with Aimee about the caffeine; if I feel a headache coming on I drink a Coke and take Aleve. I used to take codeine for the bad ones but haven't needed that in several years.

i have daily migraines as well as fibromyalgia and reynauds disease. i have tried all the alternatives such as massage, chiropractor, some herbs as well as prescription meds of all kinds up to and including high dose duragesic patches which gave me the best relief. ia m considering growing poppys and making a tincture. has anyone tried this? i no longer have a dr here who will treat me (long story!) so cant get prescrition meds anymore except for the occasional one from the er. peace connie in alaska

I tried feverfew for the headaches and had limited sucess. My Migranes are caused tension and muscle spasms. Its the minor headaches that kill me daily. I drink a can of Coke every day. Caffeine works really well. I have developed an immunity to Tylenol. It only makes a subtle dent. It works well with other things. Excedrin works great. I try not to take scripts if I don't have to. I was going to the chiro monthly. My old Dr sold the practice. Dr Joe is the new dr and he's great. He is also a good friend of ours too. I only have to go maybe every 3 months. He does a great job. I am a huge supported of chiropractic care. It keeps me mobile.

I go to a Pro-adjuster chiropractor that does NOT do any twisting, popping or snapping. I went for my initial consult on tuesday and went back today and had a thermal imaging scan done, a reflex test, range of motion test as well as a set of xrays done. I go back on monday for my findings followup and a treatment plan. I also received a 30 minute massage on Tuesday as part of my consult visit!!! It was great!

FYI always make sure that there is no damage to any of the vertebrae in your neck before letting a chiropractor touch it - Let him send you for an MRI - hate to scare you and I have nothing against a chiropractor but they can actually cause you to have a stroke by adjusting your neck if you are having other underlying disc problems. Better to be safe than sorry. Feel better soon!

My great aunt grows
feverfew to use for her migraines and today she has no headaches. She has a sandwich everyday with a few leaves of feverfew inbetween the bread. She freezes the fresh leaves for winter use. And the fresh is best. Hope that helps. MB

My GP pushes that Topomax too. Problem is, one of the possible side effects is dizziness and a general overall funky feeling.

Since I have to work around big animals (elephants and rhinos) I can't afford to be off.

I tried the feverfew tea and had decent success. Also did the chiro and deep tissue massage. These days most migraines are triggered by heavy lifting on my right side. It pinches somethihng in my upper back/neck. I fell on my neck 7 years ago. So I either lift on my left side- or ask for assistance. Other causes are sudden barometric drops. Not much I can do about that. I take Maxalt. It's another nerve block but only taken as needed and as soon as I feel the twinge behind my eye.

I went from 4-5 migranes a month to less than 1......finally!

Oh, and if you are a vegitarian, you may not have to worry about nitrates in processed meats. However, some salad bars spray their lettuces w/ a preservative that also cause migraines.

I've had Migraines all my life..
& they ARE absolutely horrible.. aren't they? So sorry that you suffer from these too sweetie..

I've been seeing the same Neurologist for over about 14 years now.. have been to a chiroprator over the years.. but with my back problems too,, as bad as they are.. I have eventually had to go alternate meds..

I find that what works best for me are Axert.. or Relpax,, & i have been on Topomax for over three years now.. The Topomax is a nerve blocker that i take twice a day.,.EVERY single day!
But it;s truly is the first that that i have ever tried that have seemed to give me any relief at all! i went from 7 or 9 horrible dibilitating migraines a month.. some which just completely incopacitated me.. to now 3 to 5 that are so much more tolerable now.. a month..
& with these I find that the Axert sems to work best for me.. better then any thing else that I've tried.. (Relpax really is the same thing..so it seems to work about the same for me..)
I do have Stadal too if they are so out of control.. but i use this only as a last defense..
As yes.. it is addictive.. & it makes me feel like crap.. & i almost always puke from it too.. & I'm Already puking from the Migraine in te first dang place.. so.. who needs mroe of this!

I know.. TMI.. but there..

If the herb route doesn't help.. which it just didn't with me for my Migraines..
Have your GP refer you to a Neurologist.. ask him if Topomax may be something for you..
You never know.. ( I think only a Neurologist can prescribe the Topomax,, )

Hope your able to get some relief Kiddo..
I know how awful these are..

I don't have migranes, but a friend of mine has suffered with them for years. She finds nibbling a fresh feverfew leaf, simple as it sounds, to work wonders. She will brew a tea made with the dried herb in the winter, when she is unable to grow fresh, but find the fresh leaf to be the best.

Migranes can be so debilitating...
Is it possible you've developed a "new" food allergy?, esp. since there are thyroid/parathyroid issues...
Candida Albicans can cause migranes among other health issues.
I was having headaches (not migranes) recently; among other pains. I had a hair analysis and found out that I have an extreme case of lead/cadmium poisoning...many of the symptoms I was experiencing were directly related to the lead poisoning. Ever had a hair analysis? Is it possible you've had some heavy-metal exposure? Ultimately, the test will tell you exactly what your vital chemical ratio's are and what may be needed to help, be it supplements, chelation or some other type of therapy needed by your (the individual) body for healing. The key is to find someone who can expertly interpret the analysis. Whatever you decide, I hope you find some merciful relief.

I second the chiro. I use to take medication for migranes and I no longer have them...well as often anyhow. The two I still get seem to be seasonal.

I started seeing a Chiro years ago and it does help and I have even done accupunture which also helped for a while. We moved here last November and I need to look for a Chiro here and try that again. I had a hystrectomy when I was 37 (16 years ago) and have been on hormones ever since so my levels are consistant, though I have been considering stopping them though my endocrinologist says not to becasue of a surgery that I had in May to remove part of my parathyroid gland. Gosh was there I time when I had all my parts? Thanks for the input.
Hugs, Kathy

Kathy,
If you find this works I would like to know as well. I take Imatrex, but this is personal, have you had your hormone balances checked. That was a trigger that I have that is being taken care of and I have much much less headaches becasue of it. Just a thought.
