I must get it from my grandmother. Shortly before she died she told me one of the most mortifying things a grandmother can tell her granddaughter. I had just found out I was pregnant with Zoe. I am very regular, like stop watch regular in my cycle and I had not bled yet. I knew I was pregnant. After Rob was told we called the obligatory people. My Grandmother, Lola Mae, was on that list. She told me, after her congratulations, that she always knew she was pregnant because she needed to go buy a jar of pickles. Not for the cravings, mind you, but to use as a douche for the pregnancy related yeast infections she always got.
I am now 6w and 1d and I have a yeast infection. I got it in part, I am sure, to the antibiotics I am taking for my wisdom tooth removal last week and in part to Sprout.
Here is my arsenal in fighting a vaginal yeast infection while pregnant:
Gentian Violet for topical use. Make sure you wear grungy panties and a pad, as it will stain. I use cloth pads, so I just use some of my older ones. Use a cotton swab soaked in the Gentian Violet to cover your entire vulva and the very inner part of your vagina.
Echinacea for internal immunity boosting. I use the recommended doseage three times a day in a cup of green tea sweetened with stevia. Echinacea is something one should always have in their herbal arsenal to combat most illnesses.
lastly,
Probiotic Dietary Supplement such as Florajen3 which contains the cultures Acidophilus, Bifidum and Longum. Acidophilus in particular is known to aid in the prevention of and the healing from vaginal yeast infections.
I would normally be using yarrow tincture, but I have read a lot of conflicting information regarding it’s use during pregnancy.
Now you don’t need to go buy pickles to douche. I think that would hurt a little, especially if you have gotten over-zealous in itching.

Posted - Aug 12 2007 : 06:45:46 AM As with all 'home remedies', it's best to use your own judgement and do your research. The boric acid/gelatin capsule has been used by many women safely(NOT during pregnancy!)Here's a link for more information: http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/yeastinfections/a/vagyeastinfecti_2.htm Of course, if you put "boric acid/vaginal suppository " into a search engine, many hits will come up. Just my 2 cents.....

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 05:15:08 AM Elizabeth- That is what I did and I still ended up getting it. It's relieved though.
Kay-Thanks for adding that. I personally dont eat a lot of sugar and try to adhere to the Brewer Diet as closely as I can. I should have mentioned it. Thanks! I am personally a little more prone to yeast infections. Both of my daughters also have VERY active flora, so I always know when one is coming and Rob and I abstain, so he doesnt get one, too. We pay VERY close attention to our health here ;)
hey! Welcome, BTW!!

Posted - Aug 10 2007 : 8:00:23 PM Hello...I am new to this forum, but was interested in your disscussions about treating yeast infections during pregnancy. I often suggest to my ladies that they cut out all the sweet stuff from their diet, including fruit and fruit juices. Minimize eating carbohydrates....they convert to sugar in the blood stream. Of course, these changes can only be done for a very short time, like two or three days. And not meaning to sound gross, but I also recommend they lay down in front of a fan, spread their labia apart, and let the air GENTLY blow. This helps to dry out the yeast cultures. Also, abstain from intercourse until all symptoms are gone. If the yeast comes back, one may have to treat the husband, too. Hope this helps you.

Posted - Aug 07 2007 : 5:16:31 PM Actually it is unsafe during pregnancy and can be potentially damaging to your tissues even not pregnant. I would never ever recommend this to anyone.

Posted - Aug 07 2007 : 5:05:38 PM I am not sure about this remedy being safe DURING pregnancy. However, it is safe otherwise. Using an empty gelatin capsule (found in health food stores and the size of a vitamin pill), fill it with boric acid powder(found in drug stores). It is inserted vaginally and allowed to naturally dissolve. It does not hurt and should not harm any tissues--external or internal. If you are uncertain about the quantity of boric acid powder, you could try using a smaller amount initially. Boric acid powder is one of the active ingredients in eye washes used for minor eye infections.

Posted - Aug 06 2007 : 9:30:55 PM I've heard of women using a yogurt douche for yeast infections altho not something I have ever tried. Where do you get the gentian from? I have been unable to find it in my local natural health store.

Posted - Aug 03 2007 : 4:09:59 PM I cant stomach yogurt pregnant or otherwise, so the probiotic is what I have found works for me, but yes, yogurt, specifically yogurt with acidophilus in it. You can even make a yogurt tampon with plain yogurt, or you can use garlic. Make a tampon with a skinned clove of garlic wrapped in something gauzey, like cheesecloth, tie a cotton string to close it and insert it as a tampon overnight until the infection goes away. OH and you can use yogurt like you would those icky itch creams too, to soothe the itch and kill whatever is alive outside on your vulva.
and I know this might me TMI, but I also find that trimming down the hair down there helps too. less of a place for the yeast to cling to, you know.
I am personally not a fan of tampons or tampon like anything, so these are the solutions that work well for me.

Posted - Aug 03 2007 : 11:32:39 AM It's not so bad. I usually get it handled before it gets too bad, that's why I thought to share the info. Works like a charm and is so much better than the chemical crap most people think is wonderful. Sure you might be purple down there for a short time, but it's worth it, IMO.
