Last night at work I saw this little girl talking on a cell phone. I went up to her and asked her how old she was. She said she was seven. I asked her if it was her phone. Again, she said yes. I then asked her who she was talking to, and she informed me that it was her boyfriend. I asked her how old he was and she said ten. I was truly flabergasted! Her own phone at the ripe old age of seven AND a ten year old boyfriend on the other end? And folks say kids are growing up too fast. Ever wonder why? What do you think? Am I just old fashioned? |

She told me her mom was somewhere in the store. That statement right there is scarey in itself. I just found it very disturbing that she didn't know where her mom was in the store and that she was talking to a ten year old. But, my grown children also thought it was strange. I'm glad I'm not the only one and I appreciate your clearing that up in my mind. Susan |

to have a cell phone at 7 yrs.old to me is just stupid! Why would a 7 y/old child need one? Where is or was the mom? I wouldn't let my daughter have one until high school, I don't even have one BUT I don't want one!!

I guess I'm among the "old fashioned" party too...although something in the back of my head tells me it might be more common sense than old-fashioned. A cell phone at 7?? Not in this house unless there were extenuating (ie. medical) circumstances.

I was given a cell phone at 16 as my mother thought it would be good for me to have "for emergencies". In retrospect, I actually wish she had not given me one as I got myself into a lot of trouble with it. Now 27 and with a young son I certainly will not be giving him a phone.. |

I think cell phones are just going to replace home phones. I grew up without a microwave until I was twelve and we never had a dishwasher, cable tv or a vcr. When I was 7 I would have been thrilled just to have had a cordless home phone, let alone a cell phone. : )

I just can't understand giving children cell phones. Parents use the excuse that they need to be in contact with them at all times, or if they're late for dinner, they can call them. If we weren't home when we were supposed to be, there were consequences.
Not to mention the cost!! Some families have each member with a cell phone + a land line and are paying an outrageous amount of money for their service. A waste, if you ask me.
I guess you can put me on the "old fashioned" list too.

A few years ago a heard a speaker on Focus on the Family, comparing todays kids with kids of the 1950s. They said that when it comes to loss of purity and innocence, kids are growing up faster than they ever have, but when it comes to hardwork and responsibility, they are way behind. It is so sad to think of children not knowing how to work hard and be responsible and yet they know things most of us wish we didn't know. My kids think they are "odd" because at 11, 13 and 15 they do not have a cell phone. Just what is so important at those ages that they need a cell phone for?!

My daughter works at a day care center and she has a three year-old in her class who everyday says he wants a cell phone. Three!! I hope his mother doesn't give in. I cannot imagine any reason for a child that young (the seven year-old) to have a phone. Good night! Kids are not kids anymore- they are just small adults. It's so sad.

Interesting topic, and one that makes me crazy as well. I teach in a middle school, where many of my students have not only cell phones but iPods as well (and not the little nano that I do, but the multi-gig, video ones!). I personally don't see the need for it, but then it's clearly a generational thing (not that that makes it alright, mind you). But seven? That's just crazy! |

Gosh...I can't imagine. I am stunned by the 6th graders all having cell phones. (not mine!) but 7...jeesh!!!! If you are old fashioned then so am I. And proud of it.

I don't think kids are growing up any faster now than when I was a kid (I'm 42). I do think a lot of kids 're being allowed to do adult things now as children than I ever did. A seven year old in a 17 year old lifestyle. That's sad.
