Posted - Mar 04 2009 : 4:09:48 PM Join the growing movement of Americans who will celebrate the arrival of spring this year by hosting an Earth Dinner™, a new tradition that gathers friends and loved ones around the table for a fresh, seasonal meal made from local, sustainably produced ingredients and conversation that connects us to our food, the earth and each other. MaryJanesFarm has partnered with Organic Valley to promote the Earth dinner challenge. What do you do? You plan a dinner with your chapter, or friends or people in your community using Organic foods from your area as dinner. It can be as big or as small as needed... and it can be all prepared or you can ask people to bring dishes for a potluck. Organic Valley has provided the "Earth Dinner" deck of cards for us to hand out free of charge to farmgirls who sign up through this thread... all we ask is that you sign up, host a dinner, and then post details of your event. We thought it would be fun to see how many farmgirls could host a dinner during the week of April 20th (in honor of Earth Day April 22).But while we have designated the week of April 20th as Farmgirl Earth dinner week.... hosting a dinner anytime during the year and around holidays.. is the goal. For more details and for some great ideas check out the website http://www.earthdinner.org/ If you want to sign up to host a "farmgirl" Earth Dinner in your home, or Community, then add your name to the thread and email me your address so I can send you a deck of cards......
For those in the sisterhood... consider your "bustin' out" badge in the process.

Posted - Apr 03 2009 : 3:21:34 PM Hi Rene' We "Island Farmgirls" of Grosse Ile, Michigan are very interested in gardening and supporting our local farmers. Several of us are purchasing CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Subscriptions this season and plan to share recipes and ideas for how to enjoy some of the less familiar produce that we hope will come our way!! Anyone interested can find more info at www.LocalHarvest.org. My husband and I are also members of the Slow Food Movement (www.slowfood.com) and were part of a similar event called "Outstanding in the Field" local, organic foods prepared and served by wonderful local chefs on location in the middle of an organic farm field. A really memorable event!! Thanks for letting us know about Organic Valley and the Earth Dinner Challenge!
Please sign me up!!!

Posted - Mar 04 2009 : 8:16:14 PM Ronda, I know that April is early for many of us. Some of the ideas we are using are local grass fed beef producers and artisan cheese makers. Organic wheat berries for bread flour.... So while it is hard, we are finding ways around it. But later in the year is perfect as well.. the idea is just to get out there and show what can be done locally.
Make sure you all send me your mailing addresses Ok. Thanks

It's kind of hard to have fresh produce in April in our neck of the woods, but I would love to do it later in the season.
