We won!!

Lucas (my hubby, which makes him Mom's son-in-law ) is the Varsity Girls Basketball coach at Genesee high school (along with working at the farm full time) and they are the State Champs!! Oh, gosh, Lucas is so proud of these girls!

Let's see, a little history...Lucas was the men's basketball grad. assistant at Gonzaga University (where we met) for three years. After we were married we moved to Kansas and he took the assistant men's basketball coaching job at Emporia State University (Division 2) for one year. After one year, he decided that basketball at that level was not what he had had in mind, he missed the teaching/learning of life lessons...the working together...the fun. And, the recruiting was a huge time commitment. Driving from Texas to Illinois through the night to watch recruits play. His little speech about it, I have kept with me, ("It is more important to me to have someone say oh that Lucas, he sure is an amazing dad/husband/friend rather than oh, that Lucas sure can coach basketball) So...to make a short story long: Mom was looking to hire a director of product development (his other degree is in business) so we moved!!

The farm is exactly half way between Moscow and Genesee (we could have gone to school in either town growing up but Mom worked in Moscow). So, anyway, Genesee is a wonderful little farm community. And they were hiring a new boy's coach this year, Lucas applied and they had already verbally given it to the assistant coach, the son of the head coach. The school had been having a hard time with the girl's coach, not because they weren't winning (they did go to state last year) but because the girl's weren't having fun and working together. So the athletic director offered the job to Lucas. Lucas was nervous about coaching girls with little experience but with Stella's arrival it made sense (and if you've ever met Lucas, he is pretty in touch with THAT side of himself, he did buy me a dozen roses every week the entire first year we dated).

SO, it has been an amazing year for him. The girls have taught him so much on and off the court. The parents have been amazing. He signed on to do what he knows is the most important about the game of basketball, EVERYTHING you learn in between. The school counselor thanked him for not having a single girl's basketball player in his office all season, which has been unheard of. So, the state bid was an absolute bonus!!

And those girls played with all their hearts!! Each game was so amazing to watch. And they had such fun doing it! Before we left they decorated our house with streamers and huge signs saying, "We're going to State", "We are family", "#1 Coach".

And they won!! Genesee girl's basketball has taken state one other time in history and it was before these girls were born!

So, needless to say, we are all a little excited around here and I am a little proud of my hubby and he is too humble, so thanks for letting me brag on him a bit. I think the part that keeps making him tear up, is everything he believes in these girls proved right. If you don't focus on winning but the journey there instead, the winning part just happens.

ps. When the bus pulled in at 1100pm after their BIG win, the fire truck and police cars escorted them on a parade through town with sirens and all! And people were in their yards waving and the band was at the school playing the fight song, at 1100pm at night!! We are so lucky to be part of such an AMAZING community!

Way to go Meg and family! It's great to hear that in this world of heavy competition, some young people are learning more valuable lessons and finding they can have a good time.

Meg, it only stands to reason that Lucas would do as well as a coach as he is a father. He has something special that so many people do not have which makes him exceptional, as are you, your daughter and your mother who have attracted others that are the same quality, made from the finest cloth there is.

Congratulations to the Girls. There is nothing better than children achieving such a fine goal.

Some people look for happiness, others create it!
Sincerely,
idcityrose

Meg ,this could not have happened to a nicer family, for those of you that have never met them , I hope someday you do.They stayed here at our farm and it was like we had known them all their lives, Words can not say how much we think of them and it sure wasnt hard to adopt them, I dont know how MJ has done it but she must be a really special woman to, because having met her family and employees they are all great. Meg. Lucas, and Stella we wish every thing great for you and love you dearly Sterling and Miss Wilma

Knowing Lucas it is no surprise that he led his girls to this big win- but what is really impressive is how happy they were as a team all season. Having Megan and Stella on the sidelines every step of the way was also a huge perk. It is a rare soul that can lead a team of high school girls through a year with smiles on their faces;) The parents in Genessee will NEVER let you quit!
Congratulations, Rebekka

That's beyond wonderful, Meg! Congratulations Genessee Girls B-Ball and Lucas! What a memorable experience for these young ladies, who have found what is typically so lacking in high school--comraderie, teamwork and lasting friendships. Good Job, Lucas, for taking them on this "journey"!!!!

Thanks for sharing your joy, Meg :)
