Posted - Apr 11 2007 : 3:39:57 PM Alee~ I struggled with getting the diapers tight enough with pins. The solution for us was as Angie said, velcro diaper covers and no diaper pins. The velcro covers keep everything nice and snug, even as she starts to really move around these days. Those snappis that Katrina mentioned are also great as long as you aren't using flannel diapers like we are.

Posted - Apr 11 2007 : 2:41:15 PM Thanks for all the hints and tips ladies :)
I think I just needed to practice getting the waste tight enough and putting an extra couple of folds in since Nora is so tiny :)
We are using covers but since she is so small almost everything is too big on her. Eventually she will fit into everything a bit better :) |

Posted - Apr 11 2007 : 09:17:12 AM Oh! I didn't even think to ask if you were using covers! You will leak EVERY TIME if you're not using a cover! We like prowraps, because they're cheap and they work. I like wool for the absorbent qualities, and the attractiveness and breathability, but they're pricey. |

Posted - Apr 11 2007 : 09:16:44 AM been a while since we were in diapers around here, but I did use to make covers with velcro so that I didn't have to use pins.

Try not. Do or do not, there is no try. |

Posted - Apr 10 2007 : 10:44:23 PM Oh my yes, pinning is difficult. I use two pins, not just one in the middle. the key is the folding, actually. lay the diaper down, lay the baby on top so the upper edge is just above the hips, fold the two lower corners into the center one over the other, pull these up between the legs(there should be a diagonal fold formed under the baby's thighs--this is what keeps the poop in), then pin each upper corner to the top couple layers of this thick center. I hope that makes some sense--there are diagrams/pictures available on some websites that are easier to see/understand.
snappis Bumkins or Bummis are the way to go. I invested in these when our son was newborn and they are a life saver! We used these for the first couple months and then switched to the pinned diapers and gerber plastic pull on covers--these are getting harder and harder to find, though.
I really suggest purchasing the special covers. they are so easy to use. I wish I had kept purchasing the next bigger size as my son grew. pinning is so difficult to get right! it's an art!

Congratulations on your commitment to cloth diapers. It is worth the effort.

Posted - Apr 08 2007 : 8:32:18 PM I can't remember doing anything special to make the diaper extra snug...I can distinctly remember the really runny poo escaping, oozing out and down my son's legs, down the stroller seat and leaving a trail behind us all the way home! That baby is 18 now... Good luck, Sharon

Posted - Apr 08 2007 : 04:36:01 AM Gee Alee, it has been many years since I have done this, but I used to put my hand, or fingers between the diaper and baby, pull snug, and hope for the best. Not much help I guess. I used cloth all the time, even visiting relatives. I remember the funniest incident was one time I noticed, one of my boys, running around, in just a diaper, and he had a puddle in his plastic pants! Oopps, time to be changed! Good luck Michele |
