I was speaking to our principal last week about how great I think it is that our school have the therapy dogs come everyday. It's made a major difference. Audrey has really been affected in such positive ways by them. So our school area has a 4H club for dogs, and he recommended Audrey for it. So, she and I went and she is so excited. Now she wants to take better care of our dog (it's usually me) and can't wait for the next meeting. It's something I get to do with her, as well.

Anyone else's kiddos do 4 H? Any other dog clubs?

yes, my son is in 4-H this is his 2nd year, but he also did 2yrs before this in mini 4-H. We love it, I was also in 4-H many years ago. He shows swine and does projects in gardening, electricity, models, and shooting sports. Although it is his projects, they all turn into family projects, but 4-H brings great opportunities & also there are scholarships available in the future.

My son is five and our county does not offer 4-H to children under 4th grade...so I started up my own organization called Kids in AGtion. We will have our first meeting soon after my wedding in June. The group is for pre-k through 4th grade and will focus on where our food, fibers and fuel come from(on an elementary level of course). I will have a homemade snack or craft each month to go along with the topic (mini burgers for beef, t-shirts for cotton, etc). I'm so excited to see my little man learn more about this lifestyle and for him to teach others what he already knows! :)

I'm so glad to hear that you and your daughter are enjoying 4-H. It was a big part of our lives when our kids were growing up. They learned so much, experienced things they would never have done otherwise. We home schooled so it was a connection to others that was valuable. The kids who have involved parents gain even more in the shared connection.
Enjoy! And be open to new experiences.

Well, we've been going and really enjoy it. My daughter loves it so much - she volunteered (and was elected and pinned) as Vice President of the chapter! Much to my surprise...guess she is just like me. When she loves something, she is passionate about it. I'm glad she found something she really enjoys. With Girl Scouts, 4H and orchestra, she's got this school year flying by!

Ann, I love the organic gardening club you run! How cool. I'm set to teach my daughter's Girl Scout troop about organic gardening next week!

Hugs,
Nicole

My DH is in 4H, and I lead a Gardening SPIN club (SPecial INterest). I love teaching the kids (and their folks) about organic gardening. This week, we'll be talking about seed starting. Going to be fun!

HI Nicole,
I actuatlly just called the local extension of Cornell Cooperative here in Suffolk County to try and get some additional information on our local 4H. I did a little online research and had no idea they had so much to offer.
My daughter is in love with the Silkie Bantams, so we added a female White Silkie to our chick order which is coming the end of April. It is going to be HER pet chicken. She has been reading books about caring for them (although she was involved with the care of our last batch of babies). She is interested in possibly taking "her" chicken to the local fairs etc.
She has a love for all animals, so I am looking for something she can become involved in and nurture that love of animals. Even trying to find a loval "farm" of sorts where perhaps she could help out.
Good luck with Audrey and your local 4H!
Hugs,

~Laurie

No it was for sure 4H. My grandma and aunts were in it too. It met at the 4H building and every thing. The fairs and things were just things my mom thought up for them to do, but wasn't required.

Heather, do you think you might be thinking of the Grange? I don't know if it's active where you are, but I see them all the time at the fair here!

As for 4H -- we just started a club this year here in our area :) Having lots of fun so far! My kids had been in 4h for 2 yrs in a town about 40 min away -- so much better to have it here!

That's neat. Here it's only for kids. I mean parents of course would help their children. But, there is no Adults only parts to it. I liked it when my mom had her adult only part to it. (the kid part is fun too though) but I would like to just get together with fellow type people to sew, do crafts, do health fairs etc like my mom did too.

Looks like a lot of fun all the way around. There seems to be a lot of adult involvement at ours, going by their brochure.

I'm kind of dissapointed that they don't have as much for adults any more Catherine! When I was growing up my mom was the adult ext president. When I called my office about it they said that never happened. Um...I was there at many of her events...I know most the people who were in it, etc. Finally the lady said, well it's not been around since I've been here. And I said well that's different then never happened, or never existed! She admitted to that. But, acted very disinterested in having a adult version though. With my mom's they did a lot of arts and crafts, did a lot for the state fair, raised money for the local hospitals, had fairs (to teach people general things), and such as that. It was a ton of fun. My mom was president for 5 years but just couldn't keep on doing it. No one else wanted that much responsibility in it. And I guess it dissolved when she stepped down. They liked doing the stuff but didn't want to be in charge. I was hoping they had continued cause I wanted to join!

My kids were in 4H with their ponies and then horses. I was a 4H leader for 15 years. It is great for the kids no matter area they pursue.
They went to Fair and then to State but I always told them that it is a fun learning experience and if they win anything that is a bonus. Just enjoy!! MB

We are in 4-H and have been about 14 years. All of my girls have shown 4-H. We are involved in sheep, goats, dogs and the non animal projects like writing, gardening, crafts, photography etc.
My girls really enjoy it.
We have three girls that in involved in the dog project right now. They do agility, obedience, rally, showmanship. I noticed that States do it differently. Michigan is a big 4-H state. We have so many projects that youth can be involved in. We have quite a few clubs in our county. It isn't really done through the schools. My girls belong to a dog club, since they show dogs but they still show through this club for all other projects.
It has been a good experience for all of my girls.

Both my girls did 4-H projects for their 4 years of high school. They may not have ever won first place in anything, but they sure learned a lot...attention to detail, a good handshake, look at people when you talk, record book keeping, budgeting, a good work ethic, and of course, how to care for animals and also the skills of the non-animal projects.

Our local dog program has grown over the last several years. It's now divided into groups according to the skill level of the dog. Everyone has to start at level 1 for beginners and then move on as they achieve skills.

I can't say enough good things about 4-H. The amount of what you learn is immeasurable. Plus, the cost is mostly minimal. My sister and I grew up in it and now my daughters have completed it. I've often thought that one day I'd like to be the Extension Agent for 4-H in our county. I love it that much!

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."
