A friend of mine told me about the Love and Logic books when I was expressing confusion on how to handle my kids sometimes. I got the original Love and Logic book and I was wondering how it would work with younger kids like mine.
Well, they have "Parenting with Love and Logic early years" book! I just got through the first few chapters and it's totally geared for kids up to around 6ish. I am so glad I went and bought the book because it's helped us so much! The kids are happy and behaved and my husband and I are happy because we aren't stressed out in public anymore! It just works.
It took a while to understand and continue to use the method as this is opposite how our parents raised us (authoritarian type). This is much easier and I can see how it makes the kids think instead of just wanting to "show us".
So I just thought I'd share this incredible book with my farmgirl sisters out there because it's so helpful when nothing else works for your kids!

123 Magic didn't work for us, but I know people who loved it. Love and Logic was more our style. I really think it depends on the kids. If there was one fast and easy rule for disciplining kids that worked all the time, the whole parenting book section in the store would totally go under. :) Another one that we enjoyed and took pieces from was Have a New Kid By Friday by Kevin Leman, but that might be for kids who are a bit older - I don't remember. :)

I love Parenting with love and logic! It's amazing! Also, I've used 123 magic, and it's okay, but parenting with love and logic is just wonderful. They use it here for foster parent trainings as well. |

I nannied for a family that used Love and Logic and I really liked it. I was happy to use it for disciplining their kiddos, and incorporated some tactics I learned in the book The Whole Brain Child. Definitely a good book/method, would recommend both!

Oh, I also found the guy you were talking about, Foster Cline. He didn't author the Early Years book. I know he did co-author the original Love and Logic book but Jim Fay and his son Charles co-wrote the Love and Logic for the early years book, which is the book I was talking about. It looks like Foster Cline's license was re-instated but it doesn't really matter in regards to this particular book. Thanks so much for bringing that up though!!! After reading about him (Foster Cline) I really don't care for him either, but I only read two articles on him so far and they really didn't discuss what happened to cause him to have his license suspended in the first place.

Which author was it as there are two to this book, I'd like to look into it myself. Typically I don't concern myself to the jot about what people specifically believe. There are very valuable points to this method and yes, I agree giving away a child's pet is too harsh.
Just like when I recommend other books I don't expect people to agree with each word or concept. I don't even agree with every single concept in every book I read. I also don't want to throw out the entire book just because I don't agree with some things. Even if one of the authors lost his license I'm sure he still has some good points as do we all. It's kind of like cooking, when you use a recipe there are some people who have to do every thing "by the book" but the most majority of people will use a pinch extra here, omit something there so basically a cookbook is more like a guideline and that is exactly what this book is to me. It's a fabulous guideline to child raising and while I don't and never to follow one thing "to the book" you can pick and choose what is right for you. But yeah, I am in total agreement about the pet thing. I read that in the main book and I was assuming there was previous discussion as to the care of the animal before leading up to the "giving away". The kid did end up getting his pet back but for me, personally, I would have taught my kids to care for an animal before they even got on in the first place.
But a death is pretty serious so I would like to look into that for myself so if you could post here or email me the info you have I'd appreciate it. My church also uses the main book for a sunday school class once or twice a year so once I read the info I would bring it up to my church because knowing my church they wouldn't support someone like that if that is the case. Please look more closely at this author as he lost his license to pratice in CO after a death of one of his 10 year old patients.
I don't think giving away a child's pet with no notice without a dicussion of making more of an effort to take care of it isn't helpful.
But everyone is entittled to their own parenting.
