Posted - Apr 03 2012 : 10:04:41 AM I also homeschool. It is the best thing for us. So many schools are cutting gym, recess, and sports.
We are outside most days. There is so much to learn.

Posted - Mar 26 2012 : 07:20:15 AM I am so sorry that Jessi hasn't come back to discuss this further..it is such a worthy conversation.
Melody---I don't homeschool. DD goes to public school. I teach in public school, too. And I sincerely hope that Mrs. Obama can use her position of influence to encourage the Department of Education to implement more playtime and more exercise time in schools across the country. Our kids need more play, more outdoor time, and more exercise.

Posted - Feb 29 2012 : 11:50:08 AM Thanks, Jessi, for posting this article. It falls in line with the developmental testing I just had done for my 3 year old--they recommended a playing preschool because children largely learn through play at her age, and that there would be ample time for pen to paper learning when she gets into kindergarten.
I am however, disappointed that a few fellow farmgirls only took one thing from this article that was issued by an independent education organization--The Waldorf School--a school devoted to free thinking. Michelle Obama and the US Department of Education were only mentioned in one small paragraph--about promoting playgrounds nationwide for schoolchildren. What's so terrible about that?
How unfair to Jessi, the original poster of this thread that you made it political--I note she hasn't commented back--I'm wondering if she feels unwelcome!? I'm certain she never thought an innocent article she found interesting and wanted to share, would end up with anti-government sentiment following. We are all of us from different religious and political backgrounds--these types of unnecessary comments create a hostile atmosphere for people who think or are different. This is frustrating to me and I'm sure, to those of us who DO police ourselves because we've been asked to, time and again, by the moderators of this forum.
I'm sorry if I've offended anyone, but this happens so often and it goes under the radar, but I keep wondering why it even has to...

Posted - Feb 08 2012 : 11:56:11 AM I so agree that play is very important. Part of my homeschooling day is nothing but play.
But I don't need government/Michele Obama telling me this. It should be common sense. LOL
