I knew I wanted to do cloth diapers and found a store in the nearby "big city" that carried them and has an exchange program. So stocked up and running with this now I am faced with hubby thinking the dirty diapers sitting for a day are not sanitary. Everything I've read says to just scrap out the poop and put into a dry pail (not easy with the wet poop of a newborn). I wash every day or so. Because I knew he was a bit phobic about this, I made a sprayer attached to the toilet to spray them out. But now they are wet and I put them in the pail next to the toilet in the spare bathroom until wash day.

He's wanting gloves, scrubbing, and wringing much like they did the old fashion type diapers. I don't want to take the time. Maybe I'm being stubborn, but I don't see the need for the huge process.

I'm also sleep deprived beyond count, so any advice for either of us would be appreciated.

thanks,
Laurie

I dry pail as well. I just use wetbags hanging on my pack n play and store my dirties in there until laundry time. :) I knock the real heavy poo off into the toilet. :)

I would just "dry" pailing where you don't rinse. I have heard time and again "wet" pailing which is what they call what you are doing, smells much more then dry pailing. I know it sounds contrary to common sense, but a breastfed baby with cloth diapers really don't have any smell. Formula poo STINKS! Formula poo on a disposable stinks even worse! Breast milk poo doesn't have much of a bad small, mainly kind of like bread around here. On a disposable the chemicals change the smell and it stinks too! not as bad as formula poo but still stink! On cloth, barely a smell. However, add water and let set and you get stink again. Really I lived in a apartment in NYC small and could only do laundry once a week, dry pailed and you couldn't smell anything. I would suggest stopping rinsing the poo off, cause it's really not something you need to do. And just putting them in a pail/laundry basket and letting them stay "dry". They will not smell nearly as bad. I too HATE wet towel smell, so I can totally understand why he wouldn't like that smell! Keep the pail open though for air drying/circulation will help as well. Personally we just used a laundry basket really!

May I recommend a MotherEase Pail and liner? Or a 13 gallon pail (which is what I recommend-a 13 gallon trash can with a lid) with a liner like the ones below?

Pail

Liners

Also, there are odor discs and other things to assist as well:

I REALLY recommend Everything Birth's site. They have EVERYTHING you need for cloth diapering. If you order, please put me down as your rep! :)

Well, I finally got a little more out of him. He's concerned with the wet diapers after I spray off the poop just sitting in a pail because of the musty and moldy smell that develops so fast. His example was a wet towel on the floor. He has an uncanny nose and can smell the slightest hint of bad. So we've decided the poopy ones will go into water with baking soda. We may end up putting them all to soak, but I'm still trying to find a decent size bucket with a lid.

I don't soak my covers, I just soak the diapers- I use Best Bottoms and MotherEase all in ones. I soak the inserts and AIO's in water and baking soda. I only use vinegar in the rinse cycle of the washer. I haven't had a problem with stinky odors yet. Once I did find that the urine smell was pretty strong so I added some washing soda to the washer as the water was running in it before adding the diapers and covers. Worked great :D

Laurie, what kind of diapers are we talking about? Also, are you using a pail liner? I'd love to discuss this with you. Shoot me an email and I can call you. Vinegar should be used SPARINGLY on any OS or pocket diapers. Covers are a little more sturdy, and prefolds can handle ANYTHING. But it depends on the type of diaper you're using. Have you tried discussing using flushable liners with your husband? That might ease his worries.

Also, newborn poop is more sanitary than what's in YOUR underwear. Breastfed poop is just basically the leftovers of what the baby doesn't absorb. There's no FOOD waste because the baby isn't eating food!

PLEASE shoot me an email and I can help you solve this problem! :)

ALSO, I'm doing a Fuzzibunz giveaway over on my blog! www.cattleandcupcakes.com

I cleaned off the nasties and then soaked them in a pail with water and vinegar. I washed regularly. I used Charlie's Soap and really liked it. I didn't fiddle with the diapers any ( I used the kind with inserts) just threw them in the washer and let it work it out. They came clean and all was well. I can understand his displeasure because there is nothing "nice" about diapers but I think the disposables are a whole lot nastier. And the vinegar really helps with the smell, bacteria etc.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

i used the "wet pail" method. If i had a poopy one, i used a seperate bucket and sloshed it to get the excess off and then dumped that water down the toilet and put the soiled dipaer in the pail. i filled it about half full of water added a little of my natural detergent and some borax. I put the diapers in until the pail got full then put them in the washer. i did wring out the diapers before putting in the washer and dumped the pail water down the toilet. I may have worked a little too hard at it, but I didn't mind. I added a little bit of softner to the wash. the instructions for care for the diapers said not to since it could affect absorbtion, but our water is so hard and if i didn't, it was pretty scratchy on his little tooshie. i didn't use the cloth on him as a newborn, cause i ddin't have the diapers then, but was using them by 2 months of age.
there are disposable liners, maybe even flushable that you can put in the diaper too that could help with the poopy ones.

I would scrape out the poo that wouldn't shake off, then toss them into a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. I filled the bucket half full with water and added about 1-2 cups of vinegar, which ever kind I had on hand.

Vinegar will kill more bacteria and stuff than bleach without the eating of the material bleach does, plus it's a great stain remover.

I would wash diapers about 2x's a week, more if the bucket got full or started to smell.

You just dump the whole bucket into the washer, add detergent and what ever else you want as if it were a medium or large load, and let it wash. I did it as a medium if it was mostly wets, large if mostly pooed on or if she had been sick. I added bleach and detergent, then hung them to dry or ran them through the drier. I used a drier sheet to soften them, even if they were hung dried. I would give them a 10 minute tumble with a drier sheet after comin off the line.

That's the way everyone in my family has always done it and it has always worked fine for us, even allowin us to pass on the cloth diapers and reuse them for other jobs.

you're doing more then you need. The washer will wash them all, you dont need to scrape them out, and spraying them and all that!

I had two preemies we never did any of that and they are fine! They are more prone to illnesses. We just threw them in the pail and then into the washer. Many people do it and no one I know of as been ill or died from it! Plus it's a lot more icky to have the disposable ones sitting around!

Oh you may also remind him you don't do all this process to his underwear and you are still alive! He may not poop in his underwear, but they still have residue and fecal matter in them from the contact with the anus.....no matter how "clean" you are, you still have it on your unders.......and people just throw them in the washer!
