Posted - Nov 10 2011 : 3:28:53 PM Has anyone taught their baby/toddler to sign? I am very interested in this and I got a book about it. It seems like a great idea, and I would like to hear of any success/not-so-successful stories you might have :)

Posted - Nov 11 2011 : 08:08:54 AM My Mom's friend did it and they recommend it. I didn't at the time, but would think about it if it came up again.
Are you going to homeschool also?

Posted - Nov 10 2011 : 4:17:11 PM I've read a few studies and they seem to all agree that the signing doesn't hinder verbal communication development, so I do plan on doing this. I like the idea of my son being able to communicate what's bothering him in a way other than screaming/crying. That's probably my biggest motivator, honestly.
I'm getting more and more excited as I read more about it :)

Posted - Nov 10 2011 : 4:06:53 PM My sister taught both her children and they even use it to 'talk' during church and things like that. My youngest is learning it as well as my hubby and myself just for fun. I love it!

Posted - Nov 10 2011 : 3:57:38 PM Rosemary has signed since she was about 6 months old. She is turning 4 this month. She started with the sign to nurse and "more". She has broadened now into more letters and spelling. She knows probably 50 signs, just simple things like "help", "potty", "play", "I love you", etc... She actually is helping another girl in her class who only knows Russian to help communicate with the teachers. They have worked on having Rosemary teach her one sign a day, and saying the English and Russian word for what she is learning, so she can communicate with the other kids and teachers better. So I am a pretty proud Momma right now!
There is a lot of mixed feeling about this out there. I used to work for a guy who told me it was inhibiting her learning and creating a deficit. Some people are really for it. I guess I didn't realize it was such a hot button topic when she started. Anyways, this is the movie she has liked the best:

Best of luck! Let me know if I can help any way!
