Hi Farmgirls!

I think I've been feeling those Summer-has-passed blues too much lately and I've been negative in my postings or replies as a result. I apologize for being such a downer!

So, I thought I would start a new, positive topic.

What is everyone's favorite activity/story/craft to do with their kids (or grandkids) in the Fall?

Fall is the time to go to the park and enjoy outside. Most days it is cooler. From Nov-Apr, we do the outside stuff. By May it is getting hot again.

I downloaded a bunch of Thanksgiving themed math worksheets, cross word, search a word, color pages, cut and paste pages, etc So we will spend next week doing all these.

Bri has started a nature journal. She draws and writes in it what we see at the park, beach, etc. The park that we like to go to is on Clear Lake, so there are plenty of things to draw.

We really enjoy baking all our old favorite comfort foods. We readily gather together in the living room to watch a movie or read books with our favorite blankets. Kind of like a big bear family hibernating.

It sounds like everyone enjoys fall and holiday crafts, cooking and activities as much with their little ones as I do. Today after art classes the girls and I did paper cornucopias. We make them out of construction paper every year and the girls draw and cut out foods they like to put in them, but then they also draw pictures of things they are thankful for to go inside.

Welp, I think we had a few weeks of (barely) fall, but it's winter for us. We've had the wood stove going for a few weeks, fairly solidly.

The kids and I need to make some fun turkey decorations (our swim lesson teacher wanted some decorations, the kids are all too happy to oblige). Some leaf somethings to hang in the front windows.

We have the most fun with Christmas family traditions... Making new ornaments, decorations to hang in the front windows, unwrapping a Christmas book each day leading up to the big day, baking, playdates, all that jazz. One year-round favorite book of the kids is The Gingerbread Pirates. Such a cute book. We might make gingerbread pirates if I have enough time even.

We love to hike through the woods in the fall here. Morton Arboretum and Chicago Botanical Garden is two of our favorite places to go.

We always have plenty of leaves to rake and my youngest son loves to jump in them. We try to spend as much time outside as possible before the rain hits. Unfortunately I've had a lot of problems on my side of the family this year & we really lost out on our autumn time. Hopefully life will get as normal as possible for the winter.

Pressing leaves! I mentioned in a previous post about creating memories and I still love looking at the pressings Violet and I made a few weeks ago and hung in the windows so the sun could catch them.

I also love to read seasonal books to her, though she is still currently stuck on Helen Cooper's Pumpkin Soup (we started that in September and haven't been able to move on much, very true to a toddler's nature).

I am getting our Christmas cookie recipes in order and going to the cake decorating shop near my office to get sanding sugar and all sorts of fun decorative ideas. I'm looking forward to making a big batch of cookies for friends and families. We have matching vintage Christmas aprons and everything :)
